narrowed overheating to two things

Still overheating after nailing down timing and switching to 160F tstat.

1) transmission-overheats when in 4th or 5th gear at 80kph approx. could it be the bearings on the input shaft are shot and theyre placing such a stress on the engine as to cause it o shoot to 220+? (happens in 5 minutes of roming on it, or approx 10 of cruising)

2)radiator, has the stock v8 rad, dont know its condition

You have a manual transmission? How do you know the transmission is overheating?

That 160 thermostat is going to open the door to other problems with stock EFI.

its an 85 carbed, not the transmission that is overheating, the engine is overheating. It will idle all day at 165F no problem. my fan is working the proper way. My dad is thinking that it could be a bearing on the main shaft that is shot and is causing a major strain on the engine (heats up quciker in higher gears()

I don't know about the bearing thing but if any bearing or moving part for that matter was that bad and was absorbing that much HP and heat, would completely destroy itself in minutes and you would know.

If your car overheats while moving at speed but not idle, it is because of a lack of air flow or water flow. Your radiator might be getting a little clogged up or your thermostat is going bad and not fully opening. I don't think the 85 has the plastic air deflector under the core support but 87-93 need those installed. You have no reason to think you have a bad head gasket right?

well its an 85 drivetrain in a 93. the air flow deflector is that little black "spoiler" under the support? SOB i took that off, guess Ill throw it back on there. headgasket should be ok, last time i did a comp test everything seemed fine,a nd temp never got over 230 for a few minutes. I ordered up a 3 row 2.25" aluminum rad just in case, (300 bucks to my door, figured its an investment for the future anyway).

ill reinstall that deflector right now and try out the new rad when it gets here. ive got through 3 tstats (all brand new, all dfferent temps). Im pretty sure theyre in the right way lol, as in when you take the tstat housing off you see the flush part (and not the spring part)

foudn out my timing was still too advanced as well!

Yes, that should be on. Maybe that will solve your problem. The spring goes in the engine on the thermo, sounds like you're good with that.

That air deflector is probably the cause of your problem. A missing air deflector will cause a rising temperature when crusing but not at idle or low speeds.
