Engine rebuild

So this isnt an exciting rebuild but it will be for me becasue its my first project.

I have an 82 GT and I have had my eyes open for a roller motor for a while. I found one for $150 and picked it up yesterday. It ran when pulled or thats what im told and has everything but lifters. Its from a 92 mustang. It also has a mild cam but the guy didnt have any specs.

So my question is what is required to get this engine ready to be dropped into my car? I know I need to tear it down and lay new gaskets rings bearings, but what about machine work?

Also the previous owner of my car claimed that my engine is bored to a 306 and has forged pistons. Is there an easy way to check that? I would hate to have the new block bored only to find out the previous owner lied to me and I really dont have a 306.

As far as the set up I am going carb'd because thats my current set up. I have a performer 289 intake and and plan on picking up a pair of gt40 heads. What cam do you guys recommend? and a different intake?

I know I have alot of questions but im new at this stuff.

Thanks

Ok thanks guys. So far my list of things is-
Gaskets
Rods
Lifters
Bearings
oil pump
timing chain- theres quite a bit of play in the current one. Can this hint to anything or is it just usual wear?
water pump

Also any suggestions on a cam and intake that complements the gt40's?

Well im going carb'd and the explorer intake is injected right? and would a stock cam compliment the gt40's better than an aftermarket cam? I dont have the stock cam so I will be buying one regardless

I wouldn't get rods just put a set of ARP rod bolts in the factory rods, you can make a good power wiyh stock rods, use that money and buy roller rockers and the ARP engine fastener kit

How do I check condition of stock rods? I want to make sure they are in good shape. And it will mainly be a DD but I want to be able to take it to the track a few times during the year and have fun with it

Well if you plan on getting gt40 heads (used I assume) you will want to have a shop go through them so at that time have them hot tank the block and check out the rest of the lower end. This is all based on your skills and more importantly your funds

Alright sounds like a good way to go at it. How much does it cost to get it hot tanked? and how much would it cost to get it bored .030 on average?
