Cooling system question

Whats up guys,I recently started to disassemble my cooling system, the radiator is out, all hoses and thermostat housing are removed, tomorrow is the water pump and then i go to the store to buy all new parts etc......however upon disassembly I found alot of rust in the system and on the metal connecting components that the tubing from the thermostat housing connects to, im worried about there being more rust inside the engine block cooling resevoir and was wondering if anyone knows of a good way to cleans the system of rust before I reassemble it completely.....and yes I realize that leaving the system open to air doesnt help much at all but i didnt have a choice. please help..thx

I've used various cooling system flush products in the past but they seemed to work as good as a few flushes of plain old water. I'd think that any chemical that gets rid of the surface rust would simply expose bare metal and cause another thin layer of rust to form again anyway. Maybe not. What ever you decide, make sure your final fill is close to a 50-50 mix.

ok, thanks for the input. id rather not spend the extra money on a chemical flush if it works the same as water.

when you pull the waterpump off put a hose in top where the thermastat housing was and let it run till the water runs clear then when you fill your system use distilled water and the addititive dont bother with antifreeze cause you live in florida you dont need it there is an additive in a little pink or green bottle that prevents rust.

ok cool, i will do that, I am actually in GA right now, the temperature difference isnt THAT huge but come winter time, where i am at things start to freeze so should i be worried about it then or would you say it isnt cold enough here to need it? also in my trans am the distributor is notorious for going dead right after water pump replacement is that something id have to worry about in the 5.0?? thanks man

nope your distrubitor will be fine.

if your in a place where it snows then you may want to use antifreeze.
