Fans don't work correctly
Today, I get in my car, turn on the fans (because my AC doesn't work) and for whatever reason, they have ceased to work correctly. No matter what setting I turn it to, air only comes slightly out of the floor vents, and the ones at the very top of the dash below the windshield.
Nothing comes out of the main vents. I've yet to rip the dash apart, but, any suggestions? |

You only have one fan, the air from that fan is directed by a flapper to the windshield, the dash vents, or the floor depending on the position you put it in. The flapper is vacuum operated and the default position with no vacuum is the windshield (defrost position). You may have never paid attention in the past but with the car off and you changing positions of the switch, you will normally hear a slight "swishhh" noise as it moves). Check the vac lines under the right side of the dash (red, blue white glob) or the vac source in the engine compartment at the right side of the firewall, There is a various check valve in there and maybe a small reservoir somewhere and the line runs across the firewall to the vac connector under the throttle body or to the vac tree on the drivers side firewall. I can't remember which. Almost everytime I've seen a Ford with this problem, the vac line is off in the engine compartment or the blue/red/white vac plug thing came loose under the dash.

I didn't check the engine compartment yet.
However, I remember how it used to make the "woosh" sound, it no longer does that. I unplugged the vacuum cluster under the glovebox, and it did nothing. The black hose was loose, and fell out easily, but the others won't budge. So I plugged it back in. I'll check under the hood tomorrow morning, but until then, what specifically should I look for/do? |

So, I pulled off the climate control panel, and, everything seems to be fine, all connected.
Where to now? |

If no one has or posts up a diagram or description, I will look at mine and see if i can identify the route of the vac lines in the engine compartment for that. I do remember that it is a small hard plastic vac line that runs through the firewall at the upper passenger firewall. It runs in the engine compartment along the top of the firewall. If that line has ANY small crack or pin hole or a bad end where it attaches, it is useless and since it is now 15-25 year old thin wall plastic, it is very brittle.
You can try a google search for mustang defroster stuck and get some more info.

AHA.
I found the leak! Now, however, this is going into a port that says AC.... could this be why my AC has ceased to work? Because I tapped it, and it just fell out, so I'll get a new vac line, and rubber fastener. Last edited by Firaga; August 3rd, 2009 at 02:58 PM. |
