Flexplate 2 Converter Problems..


My friend that helps me work on my car just got back from vacation & we began 2 install my Lentech AOD. Hopefully Darrel or someone that is familiar with AOD's & converters will read & maybe answer this post. I am gonna call Lentech tomorrow morning when they open for the answer 2 my problem but it's really been eating me up since yesterday. The problem that we ran into was when we tried 2 fit the flexplate 2 the converter we ran into an issue. The converter that was built for my tranny is a 9.5inch unit. It seems that there are 2 sets of bolt holes that are on ears that protrude farther than the converters outside diameter. The outer set are 4 the larger 164 tooth flexplate. The inner holes are 4 the smaller 157 tooth plate. I have a SFI bellhousing on my tranny & was told by Len that I must use the 157 tooth plate because the other plate will not fit inside the bell & I can C that. So I got a RPW SFI 289-351W flexplate. When we tried 2 mount the plate 2 the converter there is an approx 1/8 gap in between the pad on the converter 2 the flexplate. It does not fit flush like it should because of the ears 4 that have the flexplate bolt holes feel like the tip of the ears r contacting the ring gear on the flexplate causing the plate not 2 fit flush like it should. My friend sai that over the years he has seen this several times & all he did was put the converter on a lathe and take off the extra metal on the tabs so they did not contact the gear & allowed the flexplate 2 mount flush.. Now I must say that Len from Lentech is a very very knowledgable guy as 1 would think & he did not mention a thing about me having an issue with the above issue. He did mention that the converter did have 2 sets of holes 4 the different size flexplates. I am curious if anyone knows & I will of course post what Len tells me.. Thanks guys..

That wuz funny i'll give that 2 u. U did not offend, at least let me hopefully get a few actual answers 2 my question B4 the thread hijacking begins.. Everyone knows I have been involved in making more than a few wise ass comments but give the thread a chance to do what it was intended 4. are there not grooves or recesss for the other tabs to slide into if they arent being used to hold the converter to the flex plate?

I get what u r tryin 2 say but picture this. There r 4 ears on the converter. Each ear has 2 holes 1 above the other. The 157 tooth plate I have uses the lower holes. The holes above the ones I need in the ears r the ones that r in the way. If the ears were not so long because of the second set of holes I would b golden. I can't wait till the morning 2 call Lentch so I can find out whY is goin on..

all the Converters I have had (three) for my C4 never had any issues... I cannot help you, but am curious on what the answer is.

its called clearencing you keep calling them ears lol i call them feet. how bad is it hitting? if you just have to shave a little then go for it.

Ears, feet, tabs, whatever!! Lol!! That's what I figured. I'm gonna lop most of it off then put the converter on a lathe so all 4 of them r as equal as possible.. I just wanna make sure I don't have a balancing issue.. Thx Sean.. Of course it's a holiday in Canada where Lentech is so I'll have 2 wait till tomorrow 2 speak with Len but I don't c any other way 2 do it..

If you have time send it back and have them do it, I know that converter wasn't cheap and pulling auto trannys sucks, so I bet you don't want to do it more then you have to. See if they will sent you one already done and just send your other one back. Performance Automatic sent me a AOD converter insted of an AODE and they sent me one next day air to get me going, and then I sent the other back

what do you mean by lop? like there is alot to take off? if you are taking alot off then you may run into balencing issues. a lathe will help you should find a converter shop near you to do it so they can check the balence of it. trust me i know first hand the headach of balence issues. i had to pull my tranny like 10 times in a 2 month span... i am going to go pul my tranny now again but to fix leaks..
