Depends if the gear was right for the car. On the street a 3.73 gear is about perfect for any set up.

My black car I ran a 4.56 gear but I turned almost 8000 rpm with that car and I wanted everything out of the car and didn't care about mileage with it. I did try a 4.10 gear in the car at one time too.
