hypothetical gear question
Heres a question for you gear head nut boyz and girlz.
Lets say you have a car thats mainly stock 2.73 gears, and you want to up the gear ratio, but you want something that will run good on highway cruises to car shows or weekend getaways. What would you opt for, 3.55 or 3.73? Would 3.55 put me at a large loss on the streets? Sorry yes another gear question, Im debating still over these two and I felt like posting, so deal with it LOL

I have been debating the very same thing between 4:10 and 3:73. I am pretty sure I will be going with 4:10 and running a tall tire to fill out the fender well.
On a side note, i recently changed whole rear ends from 3:08 to 2:73 because of the condition that the 3:08 rear was in. The swap cost me nothing as I had the rear from a parts car. I am enjoying the new gears as they are great for cruising on the highway. So, in response to your question, go with the 3:73's. If you dont like how high it revs, put a tall tire on. here is a tool for you to check out: Ford Mustang: Mustang Tech: Calculators & Decoders: RPM Calculator check this out too: Mustang Performance Handbook: Engine ... - Google Books Last edited by jessemachone; August 3rd, 2009 at 04:06 AM. Yap, 2.73 is a highway monster gear.
Thats why Im thinking going to a 3.55 will be enough for me, but then I thought, will everyone else be running higher??!! lol

I actually think 3:73 is the best all around but I want a big tire so I am going to run a 4:10 to make up for it.

4.10's or bust dude. It will feel like a different car. You'll love the boost in acceleration. It's a 5-speed? Mine is and I have 4.10's and I run about 2600rpms at 65-70. Don't know for sure because my speedo doesn't work but I stay with traffic at 2600. My last fox had 3.27's and it was cool on the highway but felt like a dog on the streets. 2300rpms was like 95 instead of 60 with 4.10's haha
