Misc. problems

ok first off when the car is warmed up and you go to start it back up it is very hard to start unless you press and hold/pump on the gas pedal when turning the key. if you don't it will just crank till your blue in the face. and when its cold it will start right up. so i guess im having hard warm/hot starts problems.

another thing i have a problem with is when it starts right up or if it takes a minute or so is that the idle stays at around 1500 for about a minute and then slowly goes down to about 800-900 RPM. then if i rev it to 2,000 rpm it will shoot down to about 1400-1500 RPM and stay there for about 5 seconds and then go down to about 1000 RPM and then there for a couple seconds and then down to 8-900 RPM.

and when im driving or its idleling a gray or a white smoke is coming out the tail pipes and usally the ground where the smoke hits, there is a wet spot.

when smelling the smoke it doesnt smell like oil or anything. just smells like normal exhaust fumes.

anyone have any ideas.

Check all your vaccum lines, sounds like you have one either missplaced or a cracked one...........if its not that then, it could be timing or throttle positioning

I would check the TFI module in the distributor.

My module went bad and it didn't do any of that. It wouldn't even turn over because of the bad connection. Check the vaccum lines and or throttle position sensor

Mine did the same stuff when i put my motor back in, it was a vaccum line that i had crossed and or forgot to hook up lol

ok ill check the vacuum lines tomorrow. anyone have a diagram to which lines go into to where in the vacuum tree. and i did notice something in the engine bay that looks like it should have a vacuum line going to it but there isnt one and i have no idea what it is but when looking at the engine from the front of the car. the left side, kind of underneath things near the head/headers. from a map i have a the 5.0 it looks it can be a canister purge solenoid.

does any one have a pic of that i can see to see if that what im looking at cause i really cant see it on the 5.0 map.

all those things seem to point to your timing not being right or its not advancing

allright i see if your smog pump is still all hooked up to the exhaust and everything, then that could be your problem. That thing in your pic is the bypass valve that comes off the smog pump. there is supose to be a vacuum line coming off of it. I had the same problem but i just took everything off the smog and plugged the tree. easier way to do it, that diagram i showed you before has the lines shown you need.

i have emissions where i live so i cant mess with that stuff but look at the first pic i have posted in this post. on the top right has nothing going in to it and on the bottom right theres no vacuum line coming out of it. is that where the air bypass valve hose is supost to go in to? 2nd pic has a vacuum hose going into the tree but looks kind of crimped/bent.

ok i think i found the cause of my hard warm start problems. the ECT sensor is bad so im going to go ahead and replace that.

where can i get this sensor at. is it something i can get at a car parts store?

local parts store, i think it will probably cost you between $15-$25 you might want to call it a coolant tempeture sensor when you go there, because some parts fetchers are not smart enough to know what a ECT is.

ok well i think my motors gonna be done soon. i hear ticking on the driver side in the engine bay and also a crap load of blue smoke coming out the pipes. and a little knock when i hear closley on the passenger side. i really dont want to put any money into this car anymore so i think im gonna sell it as is or part it out and maybe get a 86 GT ive been wanting to get since i sold my old 86 a few years ago or so.
