Cold Air Intake
Ok guys. I am not good with fixing up cars and such, but I would like to place a Cold Air Intake on my 89' Mustang Vert 5.0. Its got 43000 original miles and is COMPLETELY stock. Sooner or later I would like to clean up the engine bay for example on top of the engine it says 5.0 HO
(i have no idea the name for that part lol) and it looks as if its peeling, so I would like to clean that up and get it looking like the original. I would like new spark plugs and wires, but I dont know how to do that either. IF someone could give me a walk through or come by my house here in Florida or meet me and help me learn so that I could do it later... that would rock. The car even has the original spark plug boot it had when the car was bought. I want to get this car looking beautiful engine wise, and then work on the body (which mind you doesnt have much detailing to be done) The interior is immaculate. Anyway let me know guys... I absolutely love getting to know all of you here at MM... and its great to find people who have the same enthusiasm for the 5.0 as i have always had...

a Cold air intake on our cars is a piece of cake, and cheap, u can get a no name one on ebay for 50 bucks, and its the same thing as a 200 dollar BBK or MAC cold air intake, i have a 50 dollar ebay one and i have no problems with it, its the fenderwell design (it sucks air from inside the fender and not engine bay) its suppose to suck colder air making more power than a regular intake that sucks air from hot engine bay.
the spark plug wires and spark plugs are also an easy fix, just make sure when ur doing the plug wires to take one off at a time SO U DONT MIX THE WIRES to the wrong cyclinder, i run MSD wires they are red and 8.5mm thick, but there are any companies that offer different colors/thickness/ boot styles etc for plugs u wanna stick with autolite or motorcraft and make sure they are gapped right, about detailing ur engine and engine bay there are lots of articles here on MM and the net about that

About the CAI
Now on the CAI fenderwell design is there a way to possibly get a walkthrough or a specific one I need to buy. I went to autozone to scope out parts and the guy tried to sell me like 3 different CAI's that ranged from 149 to 200 bucks it was ridiculous. Now on the CAI how would the install go... I understand the unbolting part, but my friend warned me of the MAF... now is that something I could possibly end up messing up I dont want to do anything to mess my beautiful 5.0 up.

First off there IS a difference in Cold air intakes, specifically the filter. Remember, you get what you pay for, so if you want to get an ebay intake (which is not bad) make sure you get a good filter to put on the end of it; also make sure it is a fender-well mount kit (much better than one that sucks air from in the engine bay, the cooler the air coming in, the better)
The intake plate (peeling thing) should be a simple fix: sand, tape, repaint, install On the plugs and wires, I would go with Taylor wires (I've had some issues with MSD, but usually they are a good purchase) and Autolite plugs, gapped correctly or course. I prefer a thickness tool like this: It's much easier than fidgeting with one of the cheap Autozone shitty ones. Just take your time and it's all self explanatory; do one plug and wire at a time and make sure to put them back in the exact same spots you got them from. And obviously make sure your engine is nice and cool before you start reaching around in the bay.

your talking about the upper intake manifold (The part that says 5.0 HO). I would hold off on that for now, Get more familiar with the car...
The spark plugs are very easy, you really just need a spark plug socket and a socket wrench. Any basic mechanics tool set should take care of both of those needs for you. Just do them one at a time, and replace each wire with the same length wire one at a time so you dont have to remember the order in which they are attached. |

It's just a plate with a couple screw, it comes right off....more simple than the plugs and wires

So In your oppinion should I or shouldnt I sand the Intake Manifold and repaint it?? It seems to be the only thing after cleaning the engine that shows any wear at all. None the less i really would like to get a new CAI and new plugs and spark plug wires and clean up the intake manifold... so I could take it to a show or what not. and the intake isnt a hard bolt on .... So how much are those socket wrenches and such

cold air intake is easy...might wanna get an extra person just to hold the filter in place inside the fender while you slide the tube in...makes it alot smoother.

the hardest part to puttin one on that has a heat shield on the fender and air filter in the fender is keepin the filter still and tighting the screw that holds it on mine is a bbk and for the 5.0 ho emblem on top of the intake you can sand it down and paint it any way you want
thats how mine turned out
