Newb from MS

Hey folks I'm a newb. I was recently given a 91 lx coupe 4cyl with a bad transmission that I'm turning into a project car. I have big plans to basically go through the whole thing from top to bottom and add/upgrade to make a good all around performance vehicle, no drag car but It will hold its own on the strip, no road racer but it wil be able to turn in the twistys.

Anyway I have a question that I was hoping someone might have a answer for. First off I hate the body side moldings and would love to eliminate them BUT the problem with that is the bumpers with the molding made into it! Does anyone make smooth bumper covers?

Thanks in advance.
Greg

Not really, guy down the street has the stuff to make the molds with since he used to do fiberglass work. Make the mold then use right composite plastic to make the finished product. I dont think it be that hard. I can use the existing cover for mock up the fill in what i dont want to be there and make a mold. I would rather just buy one but I guess that is going to be an option?

I would think you could grind/cut down the plastic where the molding is at until it is flush with the bumper. Then if you are any good with fiberglass you can patch it back in with the fiberglass....Shouldnt be that hard. I had a couple of holes in my fenders on my dually where the tires hit, they are plastic, and I filled them with fiberglass and they look like new and are holding up just fine, actually the fiberglass part is stronger than the original plastic and they bond just fine.

If you don't think it will be a lot of work then you have obviously never done fiberglass before, i never said it would be hard, just a lot of work. if your going to use the stock one for mock up then why not just use it for the car? it will be painted right?

Because the plastic is not thick enough, its molded into the cover thus it is the cover itself.

As a mock up to make he mold from. I know there is work involved but it's not a real hard job. It will take some time I know that. I have done more than a little custom and fabrication work in my life.

Yeah that has come to mind. Not sure with it being ridgid how it will hold up to 150+ mph? The plastic will flex and Im concerned it could come apart?

no way, fiber is strong stuff. plus on the back put some metal brackets on it with it screwed from top to bottom then fiber glass over them, grind of the part of screw sticking out the front and fiber them.

Im more concerned with the flex of the plastic around it breaking free of the fiberglass? I know how strong the glass portion would be.

Damn I wish someone just made smooth bumpers.

lol yeah that would be easier. but the plastic would hold as good as it does now. or u do what i said then wax it down and make a whole solid f.g. bumper
