4 lug vs 5 lug

when i rebuild my rear end im goin to run 31 spline instead of the stock 28, my question here is should i go all out and do a 5 lug swap while the rear end is out, or just stay with the 4 lug, from what i hear must people convert to 5 lug because of a better wheel selection but the wheels i want they make in a 4 lug and 5 lug configuration. Is there any strength issues with 4 lug ? im tryin to stick to a strict budget and staying 4 lug would save me some money.

personally I feel that its way to expensive for a 5 lug swap unless there is a set of rims you like that is 5 lug but I'm not sure about it strenthening it. It probably does but If I had a five lug conversion I would put bullit rims on it

well, im going to do more reading, i think for a turbod street stang the 4 lug would be fine, (i hope) cuz im not worried about wheels, the 95 cobra R come in 4 lug, so do the 2003 cobra and on and on drag lite etc

I read somewhere that its not really a big deal strength wise, if something broke it would be your axle, not the lugs.

well if you have some good slicks that hook hard you will snap the 4 lugs clean off.
but if u are gonna be a street turbo with street tires u will be fine.

i have some cobra "r"s they are 4 lug and nice.

really so my 1/2 stock diameter 4 lugs cant handle my 1.5x short times?

Thats crap, the biggest/main reason people swap to 5 lug is wheel selection.

put 5/8 studs in a 4 lug and you will never have a problem, Hell Im not worried about my 1/2 studs in the car now

Me, I'd do the 5 lug conversion since you were in there, but that's again for wheel choice.

Down the road, you might want something other than the four rims you can find in 4x4.25 with the right offest for a mustang (ponys, 95 Cobra Rs, or 10-holes, or '93 Cobras if you can find 'em), and the cost is the same for the rear end with whatever lug pattern you pick.

I'd do the 5 lug 4 wheel disc brakes for better selection of rims, resale value, and better stopping power. I mean, you're already replacing the axles so why not.

this is what i originally wanted to do, not for re sale cuz im never getting rid of my FOX, but deff better stopping power its newer technology, easier to replace pads etc, but im tryin to get a low budget project going, and im not worried about wheels, i actually found some nice cobra r wheels on ebay ive been pondering with,

there are cars in the nines with 4 lugs all day long... it's not needed other then wheel selection as long as you have good axles and there's requirements on the studs depending on what class you run as well.

+1 if your replacing, get the better set up. no point in replacing then wanting to change later and having to do it again. spend the little extra now rather than alot later.
