ported stock heads
how much can I port the stock heads on my 88 and what kind of hp increase can i expect......i dont have any money for new heads so i have to do it my self.

15 hp or so, maybe 25 with bigger valves. Will help any cam or intake mods produce better though. Blend the bowls to the ports, remove the smog bumps from the exhaust, gasket match, and smooth out the casting flaws. No need to try and make the ports any bigger with the stock valves. If your gonna go to bigger valves you can get alittle more aggresive removing material. Your not gonna outflow an aftermarket set though, so keep that in mind.

these could help u i dit it a some time back and i felt the difference i use a felpro gasket to port mach the heads to the intake and headers but be real careful and listen to make sure that u dont cut into a colant passage it will make a high pitch sound as u get close to them

sounds like alot of work for such a little gain. what year explorer came with the steel gt-40 heads not the gt-40p

I know for sure that at least the '97 Explorer had the GT40's. I'm not positive on the others.

Generally, you need a special set of headers to fit the GT40p heads. If you're just looking for a decent flowing "stock" head, the p's are actually a little better than the regular GT40's. HOWEVER, if you're going to have any work done on them...And you probably should if you're going to buy a set of used ones. They'll generally need a valve job, or at the very least be cleaned up. And then you'll need a valve job anyway. Then your best bet is to go with the non "P" heads. |
