how does a spool act on the street

i always thought spools were mostly for straight line racing/drag racing but what about running them on the street taking corners and going around bends?

correct me if im wrong, spools lock the two axles completly together so taking a right turn from a stop light, the left rear wheel is going to want turn more revolutions than the right rear wheel...chirping the tires around corners sounds like itll chew up ur tires real quick, especially if they are soft compound tires...

any opinions on using a spool for street use?

i wouldn't do it, but i've seen other people do it. it's true that your tires will chirp around turns

Have you done it?

I've got several friends that run spools/lincoln lockers on the street, and I just took a roadtrip to Seattle and back in a spooled car. It definitely chirps the tires when you're doing low-speed maneuvering (think parking lots), but once you're at speed, you don't even notice it.

On wet/slick roads, you do have to be a little careful, however if you do start to go sideways, a spool is VERY predictable and VERY controllable. There's a reason most drifters run a fully locked diff.

That being said, I wouldn't run one in my only car, and certainly not if you have issues attracting cops. But a weekend toy? I'll be putting one in my Celica as soon as the finances settle down.

yes and it sucked, if it got wet, rained moist anything the car was constantly sliding one way or the other.

predictable or not, it gets old fast having to constantly correct the car when it starts dancing

driveable,. but they can be a hand full and if your Stang doesn't have at the least subframes you will be stressing the hell out of the chassis

Drifters run them b/c they have to have both tires spinning all the time

damn u guys LOL i cant make up my mind, i think it would be cheaper and (hook alot better) if i just run a spool, but the aussie locker is prolly the strongest locker on the market or planet... and its only 250 bucks for the 8.8inch Ford Beast of a rear end, the thing i have to get an open carrier to use the aussie locker, (junkyard ford explorer open diff) or buy a new one im guessing, prolly about 250

So my rear end plans:

UPR diff cover 150 bucks
moser 31 spline axles 250
open carrier 250?
aussie lock 250
moser c clip eliminators 150
?.?? gears (was goin 4 3.73's but not with turbo so im still at the drawing board with gears)

5 lug conversion ??? maybe

thats well over 1000 right there...

A Spool is like a welded Diff,Its nothing like a locker,With a locker it will lock and unclock when cornering to act somewhat like a limited slip posi,With a welded diff or a spool it will drag/skid the inside tire while cornering,And if its Raining out and you have a spool thats not a good combo.
