What is biggest restriction on stock intake?

I am looking to setup some mods in the next couple of years. I have an 87 Speed density with 5 speed, 3.73, diff rebuild with kevlar clutches, flowmaster 2.5 catback, Pro 5.0 shifter, 2 row alum radiator, K&N, free power mods. I plan on adding some headers and an X-pipe first and eventually want to be low 12's car with no nitrous or slicks in a few years, maybe drag radials. I am looking at AFR 185's, intake tbd, maybe cam, fuel pump & injectors after exhaust and intake.

What is the biggest restriction in the intake tract?
Is it the throttle body, intake itself, or what?
What should I do to achieve my goal?
I do have the intake silencer removed in the wheel well.

Thank you for any opinion you have. I am inexperienced and any help would be greatly appreciated!!

#1,and #5 lover intake runners. Flow in the 150s. The others flow almost 200.

You will need to flycut the pistons to run the AFR185's. if you are not planning on changing pistons and do not want to deal with flycutting the stock ones, go with a set of TFS TW heads that have been ported by a repuatble shop like TEA, Fox Lake, ETC.

I'm pretty sure TFS now offers a CNC head out of the box, but they may be a little large for your intended combo.

The whole lower needs to be ported and the bolt pinch in the throttle body inlet needs to be opened, then a good gasket match of upper to lower. It will wind up flowing 200-210cfm if done right, same as a stock Cobra. If you have the tools and skills, you can do it your self by following my article in the tech section here:

EECTuning.org • Index page

problem got resolved.

I'm here more often than you think, just don't post up that much - only if I can contribute beyond what's been said already.

[QUOTE=chrisbmx;2364206]I am looking to setup some mods in the next couple of years. I think I may go with the twisted wedge heads instead of the AFR's since I don't want to get into fly-cutting pistons or changing them like mpe331lx noted. Will this combo most likely get me to my goal? What does mpe331lx mean when he says ported twisted wedge heads may be "too large for my intended combination"? Any other suggestions? Thanks

What about the other restrictions? Between a K&N panel filter, 55mm MAF, a stock throttle body, stock EGR spacer, stock intake, and stock heads, which one is the bottleneck, the intake? Which would be the list from most restrictive to least restrictive?

change the 55mm MAF out for a 94-95 70mm MAF (cheap) and the K&N panel filter first. After that, port the lower intake or switch to a Explorer intake with the internal EGR passages like the stock intake. You'll also have to drill/tap the ACT and EGR coolant return lines in the Explorer lower or move the ACT to the plastic cold air intake and block off the water to the EGR spacer.

Where is the best place to get a 94-95 70mm MAF? Are they cal'd to 19 or 24# injectors? How cheap?
Should I change the panel K&N to the conical type?
Thanks TMOSS

yes, the 94-95 MAFs are calibrated for 19# injectors. Use a K&N panel filter in the stock cold air intake. You can get them real cheap if you look - lot's of them have been removed in upgrades.

I have the K&N panel filter already. Will the 94/95 MAF swap out with the stock 55mm with no changes in anything else (wiring changes)? Do I need an electrical connector from the 94/95 also or just the MAF? How much power will it support (I guess what I'm asking is when/will I have to upgrade to a bigger MAF)?

The explorer intake: Which year explorer do I get this off of? Is there a special kind of intake or certain explorers I need to look for? Is the intake gasket a direct match to the stock 5.0 intake? If it is, can I get either intake gasket and expect it to work?
