Woah so I just bolt on a X-pipe and unskrew the caps and I'm running strait exhaust?

What about emissions? Can I put my current exhaust behind this X pipe?

he was being sarcastic with that post.

ALSO there are TONS of guys who will talk to you about setups, what works, what doesn't. go to the track and talk to some people. let them know you're clueless and want to learn. until then do some searching, take some initiative to learn, don't just post demanding you get answers when an easy search will provide you with those answers.

tunnel rams are good for high rpm's but you cant over carb it 2 300's or 350's should be plenty,but can get a much better running motor with a single carb set up

I would recommend against this, because every guy, their brother, their mom, their dog has had a 5.0 at some point. and they all know everything about them, take advise from people who you know to be reliable and knowledgeable, not some hick about to blow his shit up at the track

Also, IMO don't be so worried about the reaction time... infact when i first started out I would wait for the other car to leave or just wait until I was ready to launch the car. obviously not wating at the tree for minutes, but you get the idea...

Fijistudios: I put new netami renegade racing seats in and pulled out the spair/jack/lug wrench and......my next pass will be without my girl in the passanger seat.

That sounds like you're still not certain what parts work with what (and why), and you're just trying to throw together a combo that appeases the peanut gallery.

Wasn't that you that posted up your Dad's old pinto in the Other Cars section? Any reason you're not asking him for guidance?

Thats because i'm not certain on what parts to use. I have no idea. Thats why I keep asking!

Yeah thats his pinto, I tried to copy his way of doing it, thats why I had the tunnel ram and 600's. They were his.

Okay, well to start, there's a formula for how much cfm your motor will consume at a given rpm. Using that, you can figure out the "right" size carb, and go from there.

You can look at where you want your powerband will be, and that should tell you what parts to use. It doesn't make ANY sense to use a cam that doesn't "come on" until 6500 rpm if your heads dictate an upper limit of 5500, and it doesn't make any sense to chase 9500 rpm if your budget doesn't allow you to custom fab parts made out of unobtanium.

My opinion is you shouldn't change any part unless you know WHY the new part is better than the old part, and how it will affect everything else.

I guess what I'm saying is that I appreciate that you're asking, but you're asking the wrong questions. You're asking for fish, we're trying to teach you *how*, not just hand you a delicious bass.

The formula is...

Engine Displacement in cubic inches * max rpm / 3456 = CFM (assuming 100% volumetric efficiency)

So, if you have stock displacement, and are turning relatively stock rpm, it might look like this:

302*5500/3456 = 480.6

However, you'll never get 100% VE, so you get the next bigger size. That gives you a 500 cfm carb as being "right" for that displacement and rpm. The *stock* carb on the '83-'85 5.0 HO was a 600 cfm Holley 4180.

So, for the curious, you can plug that back into the formula to figure out what you can spin a 302 to with the stock carb:

302*X/3456 = 600

302X = 600*3456

X = 600*3456/302 = 6866, but again, no 100% VE, so we'll round that down to 6500.

So, really, unless you're pushing better than 6500 rpm, the stock carb is NOT the power restriction, so if you want to make more power on a stock motor, you'll want to look elsewhere first.

obviously if you're at the track, you're going to see who's going fast with what set up. i'd rather take advice at the track from someone who's doing a lot with a little, than some 16 year old kid on this forum.

now that i've re-read your post, you've got to be kidding me. you can't be that senseless, can you???

east/central florida.

i wouldn't just go up to someone and say hey, how can i make my car fast???

might want to just talk to them about their set ups, and what they run. dont do this at a car meet, go to the track and talk to the faster guys. not the 8 & 9 second guys, just talk to the 11 - 12- 13 second guys...
