302*5500/3456 = 480.6

However, you'll never get 100% VE, so you get the next bigger size. That gives you a 500 cfm carb as being "right" for that displacement and rpm. The *stock* carb on the '83-'85 5.0 HO was a 600 cfm Holley 4180.

So, for the curious, you can plug that back into the formula to figure out what you can spin a 302 to with the stock carb:

302*X/3456 = 600

302X = 600*3456

X = 600*3456/302 = 6866, but again, no 100% VE, so we'll round that down to 6500.

So, really, unless you're pushing better than 6500 rpm, the stock carb is NOT the power restriction, so if you want to make more power on a stock motor, you'll want to look elsewhere first.
Cool. thanks a lot man. So if my car has a aftermarket cam, headers and intake manafold and I've ran a about 7800rpm's (on the highway pinned), so I would need a 750? since I would have to round up from 681? Right? (BTW: thats all hypothetical)

What other parts could I start to work on to get the RPM higher?
Gt-40p Heads, 4.11's, notched pistions, bigger cam.

Then to put the power to the ground?
Slicks, Short throw shifter, 4.11's, less weight, rear shocks/struts?

If i got this stuff right? or if yall could give me any more POINTERS, that would be great!!!

might want to just talk to them about their set ups, and what they run. dont do this at a car meet, go to the track and talk to the faster guys. not the 8 & 9 second guys, just talk to the 11 - 12- 13 second guys...
Dude, I was just kidding, I dont just ask "how can I go faster?" I'm not that dumb. I was just paraphrasing.The only info i got out of anyone was how to make a 540 Dart run 7's. People here that have 11-13sec cars dont talk until they got 8sec cars. Not kidding.

now that i've re-read your post, you've got to be kidding me. you can't be that senseless, can you???

and you can not possibly sit here and tell me that you have not seen an 11-12 second 5.0 held together by duct tape, spit, and a prayer. just because your going fast now doesn't mean your doing it right or safely. or if it will even hold together for that matter. i'm at MIR all the time, i hang out with guys who run in the mid to low 6 second range in the 1/4, i dont claim to know it all, actually i'm far from it, but what i do know is that you cant nigger up shit when your goign that fast. i talk from my personal experience

I agree , a set of gears, a set of headers, nice air intake, too early for carb work....

I think you need an after market tach b/c I'm not thinking you stock 302 is turning 7800rpm.

once i had to hold my car together with duct tape...

the tach kept falling out of its "holder" when i would launch...
duct tape cured that until i could get home and fix it right...

you got a way to make a car run fast with "500" dollars, that isn't niggering it up???

hey baine, i got a set of stock e7's i'd be willing to sell you for only $600... you might ask why so much for e7's??? well, i filled the intake ports with jb weld and stuck a straw through it... the velocity will be to the MAX

It's all good man, this is one hobby that takes time... not like trying to find the rock dealer and just smoking the rock, no no this is much more than that. waiting, crying, bleeding.... the list goes on but you'll soon find out. The list of mods you have is looking good, that mani does you no help without those heads, I would def. put those on the "next to buy" list.

hey buddy not trying to shoot down ur theory on sea level to up at bandimere but from here to sea level u might gain a second and a half if you are lucky its more like a second difference...and for the nitto's i have the same ones on my car for the track (for the street now for traction) they are not badtires heat the fuck out of them and just ride the clutch at the light a little...plus i just turned 18 and my fox should be hitting high to maybe mid twelves this highschool drags this year at bandimere with traction look for a black on black 5.0 with black wheels with a vortech on it from bear creek......just like stated a while back a power adder is the way to go at altitude i am hitting 8 pounds of boost and loving it.....and by the way i know a couple really good guys up here who know thier shit bout 5.0's if u are willing to take their advice so if u are interested i will give u there numbers the one guys fox runs 10.35 up here and he builds motors on the side...but like stated before u need to talk to and copy a 12 second guys car not a ten second car cuz i know i have a killer paying job while in school and there is no way i would be able to build a car that fast off my salary..but yeah just becarefully with that 150 shot she might go boom!!!just saying but hope to see u at high school drags this year

i'd put my money on your cam/intake combo moved your powerband up more leaving you with less torque but more power in the higher rpms

son of a bitch.. this thread makes me want to punch myself in the face.. since your 17 go buy some engine building books and learn from them.. they are very useful. Also pick up a book on engine dynamics and cam theory.. it will help you understand why throwing a monster cam and a tunnel ram on stock compression motor is a bad idea. Other than that, build your bottom end before it ends up all over the track. good luck
