Few ?'s about 5.0's
Ok I want a 5.0. Pretty simple except I live in California so I have to deal with smog and I'm broke. Basically I want to trade my 97 v6 5 speed for a manual 5.0. I know about the headaches of the 94 95 computers but prefer it's body styling. Either way I want a real mustang and I want a little input from you guys as to what I should be looking to get and or if anyone would even be willing to trade a clean running 5.0 for a clean running 3.8 any help would be greatly appreciated.

Weird, I thought I had posted in this thread already...
What I had said was stock is your friend. Don't buy anything modded unless you KNOW that all mods are 100% smog legal and that it'll pass the sniffer. I just picked up a bone-stock 5.0, and it passed smog just fine. There are CARB exemptions for most parts, so you can build a beast of an engine (500+ hp) that's still 100% smog legal.

Sweet! I don't think I'd take it as far as 500 but at least 375 at the wheels to have some fun with. Building a 72 for some serious power hence the broke. Now the question is 1991-1993 or 94-95 and am I ever going to find someone that would want to trade their stock 5.0 for my stock sixer?

'88-92 gives you both Mass Air and forged pistons (Mass air was '89 and up in the rest of the country, but Cali got it a year earlier). '90-'93 has slightly better suspension geometry. '89 is the last year of tilt steering in the foxes.
'94-95 is slightly heaver, but it's a stiffer chassis, has 4-wheel disc brakes, and yet again slightly better suspension geometry over the foxes. I believe that '94 also has 3.27s stock, rather than the 2.73s in the foxbodies. Really depends on how you want to use the car. Being lighter, the foxes are definitely better for drag racing. With the better brakes/geometry, the SN95 is a better corner carver. I think the SN95 is a nicer car to be in, but the fox hatchback will be the better DD just due to the amount of space in the back. I honestly doubt you'd find anyone to trade you a fox for your sixxer, at least one that's not in considerably worse shape.

I agree that you will have hard time trading. Might be better off selling the sixxer and looking for a fox/sn95 with the cash from the sixxer. But good deals are known to be found so if you search you might find that one good deal! I know I did. 8)

Yeah it's going to be a daily driver I commute about 14 miles each way but I want the roar of that 8 and they are so much more fun to drive. I do like the sn95 visually and I would like the car to be multipurpose street strip and maybe even track if I can ever get out to infenion or Laguna seca. I just need to find one.

Figure out what you want and go for it. Trying to make a jack-of-all-trades setup only means that it's not quite right for anything. My suggestion is try your hand at the things you want to do while leaving the car stock. When you find the thing you really want to keep doing, build the car for that. Nothing's worse than starting out, putting a few mods on the car, then finding out that those mods are illegal for whatever class you end up being in.

Yeah well honestly I'll never make it out to the track and it's going to for sure be my DD but for sure I want to take it to the strip seeing that there is one close to where I live. I guess it just boils down to finding someone to trade me anything from 88 to 95. The next question is then how much of a headache is the computer in the sn95's? I hear it's a real problem to contend with. Also what kind of room do we have for rear tire width between the 88-93 and the sn95?

If you want a mod motor, don't waste your time with an NPI 2v (that's '96-98 GTs). Your first several hundred dollars worth of mods will just be to bring it up to where a '99-04 GT is stock. Go for the 5.0, if nothing else it's CONSIDERABLY cheaper to get power out of.

Alrighty so 5.0 it is. What is a good price for both a 88 and later fox and a sn95?

![]() Really depends on a few things. Condition of course, then manuals usually go for more than automatics, Coupes more than hatchbacks, and hardtops more than convertibles. I picked up my 'vert auto '90 for $1700, but it's pretty beat. I've seen clean 5-speed notchbacks going for $6500 and more. I would expect to pay $3500 for solid car, more if you're picky, less if all you care about is getting the right motor.

I think it's as simple as 5.0 5 speed coupe hatch or notch I'm not a vert guy other than that I don't care as long as the car is solid and stock. I don't want to buy the car then rebuild it two weeks later. It's going to be my DD especially of I trade or sell my sixxer for it

You'll probably have best luck looking at LX hatches. They seem to go for $500-1,000 less than GTs. Last time I looked, Sac had a LOT of Mustangs on craigslist. You should be able to find something decent in your price range that will pass emissions.

DUDE, sell it and buy something, simple. Ill be honest, unless you find a sorority girl, I doubt any man with testicles wants to give up a gt/lx car for a six.
do some research, google, yahoo, pick one. Just do some reading. Go to barnes and noble, they have tons of books on how to build ford engines, susp, fuel systems. Put a little leg work into it. If you are building one, why build something else? pick something and put all your efforts in one direction
