help picking heads
after i upgrade to 3.73's and get a new tranny ill be upgrading to either the afr165's or the tfs twisted wedge. my current setup is
-stock 5.0 bored .30 over 130-140psi on all cyl -previous owner said it has a b303 cam in it....but it could be a crane variant. -stock e7's with stock rockers -bbk equal shorty's (switching to 1 3/4" long tubes with matching o/r h) -bbk o/r h -magnaflow catback -ported typhoon intake (70mm tb) -stock maf -e-fan -fenderwell cai -removed all smog (getting egr plate delete bracket) -msd cap, rotor, wires, coil id like to not touch my shortblock at all and justswap heads with appropriate injectors and get rid of that stock maf. but im not sure which heads would be better but i like the numbers of the afrs. but i can get the tfs's for cheaper 200 dollars cheaper. should i run a 1.72 rocker to kick up my lift? what kind of numbers would i put out with this setup? id hope for 350 at the crank this is all in a light ZERO option 89' notch with 17x9 03' cobras and a 275-40 street tire. high elevation 1/4 times? any push in the right direction for my combo would be well appreciated |

Get the tfs twisted wedge heads.
And i don't think you will see 350hp but we will see what the more experienced say.

if you want power ditch the alphabet cam, secondly, find a cam/heads/intake combo that works together. 24lb injectors is all you should need. ditch the shorties do the long tubes and other little nick nacks and you should be good. trickflows with a good cam should/could net around 300-310 depending on how its set up to the tires

obviously this is totaly dependant on the cam, but thats why the "twisted wedge" shit is cool, lets you run more aggressive cams on a stock shorblock

trick flow heads, track heat mani, Camshaft Innovations - Home CamMaster Jay Allen for a cam. Should put you close to your goal with supporting mods....dont forget subfames, control arms, and some good tires or you wont be able to do anything with it....

well after looking at the "400hp with stock cam and carbed" that carcraft put up....i figured with a better then stock cam and a good flowing efi intake along with heads that will flow near the same i should be around 350hp at the flywheel?
i know its all in my combo. but if im going to spend 500+ on an intake that flows better then the typhoon i have im just gonna go carbed i think. with that said keeping my (stockish) cam and JUST bolting up some of those heads what would my car run at the track with mm full length subframes and 3.73's with a weight of about 2900lbs? i need to weigh all my options because im only 19...its a recession and getting full time work that will last is VERY hard |

The heads is money well spent.. the intake is going to gain you some because besides the lower intake is the biggest bottle kneck of a stock motor but depending on your over all combo intake selection varies. The heads are a close second in the bottle kneck so you'd be banging out two of the biggest hp robbing pieces of the puzzle. The cam should be your last piece of the puzzle and in most cases people have made good power with the stock cam because they love the drive ability of the stock cam. Look over on corral.net you'll see a few threads about people running low 11's with stock cam etc but im not going to sit here and tell you there's nothing to be gained by a cam switch. Im just going to say it all depends on your overall combo and goals for the car.

Why would AFR be a better head than trickflow?

Canfield trickflow and afr are all decent heads. Weather it's amagazine article, or just repeating what someone else says on a forum, I'd urge the OP to do all his own research, and spend alot of time doing it.
