Gear Ratios
I just purchased the rear for my mustang project, an 8.8" with 3.55's. Has anyone here gone up to 3.73's from this size gear? is it worth spending the extra money or should I just keep the 3.55's?

For the money I'd stick with the 3.55's. For the street I really don't think a gear change is noticeable unless it's by 0.5 or more.

What is your car's main application?
Is it going to be an all-time street car for a daily driver? if so then stick with the 3.55's If you plan on taking it to the track every once in a while or showboating a bit then I would personally buy the 3.73's, see if you like them but still keep the 3.55's. if you do like them then you can sell your 3.55's or vice versa if you dont then re-sell the 3.73's I use 3.73's on my 88 GT and I like it but I have never driven with 3.55's so I cant make an actual comparison, sorry. |

it is not worth it unless you step up at least two gear sizes

3.55s are fine but I dont think you would feel much of a difference if you only move up one size. either get 4.10 or stick with 3.55s either way a hell of a lot better than 2.73s

I've got 3.73 in my '89 and I love it! I find it to give plenty of power and i have no complaints. to be honest with you i have never driven on 3.55 so i don't know about those.

Sounds like the 3.55's are the better choice. I'll see how I like them, i can get ahold of a set of 4.11's if I decide to step up the size a bit.
I bought the rear end from a friend of mine for 20$, however it needs to be retubed. but the gears and pumpkin are fine, and so are the 5-lug axles. |

As for the gears, I gots 3.73's and I want 3.55's. Twistin 3K at cruise speed is not conducive to keepin a low profile. Especially with no cats and 40 series flowmasters and dumps...

alright fools i deleted his CAPS that seemed to piss everyone off and re-did it in lowercase so you all can stop bitching now. anyways as far as 3.55s to 3.73s you arnt going to notice much but it depends on your set up. if its a race car and you need that extra little bit more to get you through the traps at the right RPM then go for it but if its just a street toy I doubt you will see much of a difference. If you want a noticable diffrence put 4.10s in it i have them and love them.

I know this is an older post, but I have a question and felt it was better to use this post than to start a new one.
The car (1990 GT) I am thinking about getting has 3.08 gears in the back with a T5 tranny. One of the first things I want to do is replace those 3.08 gears with something else. Now, the car will be used as a daily driver, but it will also be used as an AutoCross car on weekends. I am not really interested in drag racing. So, here is my question, which gear ratio would suite me better? 3.55's or 3.73's? And why? Thanks |
