bottom end freshen up worth it?

About to start pulling the car apart for my head/cam swap.

A buddy of mine offered to help me pull the block out, and check the bearings and such, as i will be spinning the motor up another 1k rpm's and these 20yr old bearings might not take the RPM's, let alone the RPM's plus nitrous. Ive never pulled the motor out before, but done just about every damn thing else on this car.

im thinking some stock style bearing's, and maybe a new oil pump? What bearings do you guy's recommend? Also do you think replacing the oil pump is worth it?

while the block is out i plan on cleaning up the engine bay of the grease, oil and grime as its pretty nasty. Also ill be removing the emissions equipment, and all the A/C junk.

Plan's are to run this set up for a while, I need a roll bar to use the nitrous at the track, so thats next, once the H/C/I/nitrous on the 302 gets old, i plan on building a 408.

Kinda random as it seems, but just a little worried as Ive never been this deep into the car, and any advice/recommendations would be appreciated.

don't waste your time. unless you're going to measure everything and machine what needs it then it will be worse than it was before...

If you have it apart and you want to make power with it def do a rebuild. Better do do it while its all apart then find out it not quite up to the power it should be after or worse blow it up.

i just installed a aftermarket oil pressure gauge to check the pressure before tear down.

50psi at cold idle.
25psi at warm idle
just under 50psi warm at 2000rpm

warm idle oil pressure is lower then I would like :/

i would put an anderson cam in it, spray it and you will be fine if you have a good tuneup in it.

when in the rpm's it does fine. so im not sweating that. but it just worries me a bit that it gets to 25psi at idle when warm.

how is that fine?

hrm.

makes me feel a bit better then.

just thought something around 35 would be better. the pressure at 2k rpm's is rock solid and 50psi is more then enough, so im not really worried about that.

got alot of work to do in the morning.

the "general" rule of thumb, 10 psi for every 1000 rpm's is enough oil pressure in a hydraulic roller motor.

you haven't had to many Fords (lol) I have had f150s with 302 and 351s with 20 lbs of pressure for over 100k miles and not a problem.

its fine , a loose motor will make more power anyway and be more forgiving with a little nitrous , I wouldnt pull any of the caps , just put the cam in it and heads on it and let it ride , maybe do new gaskets , and new harmonic balancer

Could do a leak down test, to make sure the cylinders are still holding pressure. No way to really know how the bearings are without pulling them and at that point you may as well just replace them

Yea 25 PSI at idle warm is PLENTY of pressure... Hell even my brand new build once its warm only idles around 35 PSI.... THere is no need to do a rebuild on it... seems to be strong.

And honestly, dude I really dont have ANY spare time right now... I wish I did, but I am SWAMPed with school and all the responsiblities around the house, since my mom had surgery.

did you get my txt?

well in that case i will leave the bottom end alone. But i would still like to replace the pan gasket, as it leak's real real bad.

shouldn't I be able just to jack it up somehow? dunno how ppl do it without a hoist.

sorry to hear about your mom man, what happen?
