460 swap.
Alright. I have my 302 in my car.. but just looking at it. It isnt enough. My buddy has a salvage yard and has a couple 460's in c4s in there. so i wanta do that.. Big block mustang..should be a hell of a ride. I found my mount kit. and headers.. But ive read that you can space the factory k member.. how is that done?? And what c4 will i be looking for that will bolt up to a 460?? And i havent found a good right up on the 460 swap, unlike how to convert from carb to efi or vise versa.. Any help would help me alot. Oh and alot of people are saying that this isnt really a costly swap
. My cars already stripped down of interior, the rubber stuff on the floor is long gone, so my cars light.just let me know thanks

dont know about the k member, i was under the impression the swap kits were using factory k members.
for fuel injection its a touch of your own work. There arent any real performance oriented f/i intakes for the big block. Your best bet is convert a carb intake into a F/I intake. Weld inthe bungs for the injectors and mount a throttle body on the carb pad. you can use a mustang harness, might have to extend a wire or two, but thats one way to keep the cost down.

I was just referring to efi to carb and what not to my 302. i was going to convert that to carb and there are alot of articles( how to's) on that but not alot on the 460 swap

Above is a link to a 501 I built for such a project.. You can see my 79 fox also.. I was able to use my stock K-member with the hooker headers made for the 460 swap. I think I got the motor mounts from a place called total performance. Personally after seeing them, your just better to make your own. I also had a moroso oil pan. The swap was pretty straight foward, even with a c-6, much like a 351 swap. The access to get to the header bolts on the 460 is actually easier than a 351w. The only other change may have been going to manual brakes for valve cover clearance, as earlier foxes had a larger dia booster. You also will need a hood with a cowl to clear the air cleaner. I've have since changed my stock K-member to a tubular design without mounts so I could get the motor down lower to fit under my stock hood with the 83 fox hood scoop. I made a front and mid plate for mounting the motor. After all this, I feel these Big Blocks are just to nose heavy for a fox. I'm actually trying to sell my motor to go back to a stroker windsor.. Live and Learn, but to each his own.. Hope this helps some and good luck.. |

The late 60's to early 70's are the ones you want.. If your going with a stock stroke, any of those years will work. If your going with a stroker and dome pistons, you want a 72 block as it has a 10.322 deck height compared to the other ones at 10.300.. The only 4 bolt block is the 429 SCJ, which is extremely hard to find. A production 429-460 block with a truck crank can turn 7300 rpm and can probably handle 700 + horse..

I do believe that there was a c-4 behind a bbf in some passenger cars of late 60's.. As long as you have a c-4, you can probably get a bellhousing from J.W. ( J.W.Performance Transmissions ).
Yes, I did have to have the driveshaft shortened. I think it was like 1.5" to 2" Just make sure to have them high speed balance it. I think I had like $60 bux in it... |

Great news. My buddy called me today and his grandpa has this ford rv with no title at his tractor trailer garage, and welp, its mine. 460 running carbed motor and tranny.( possibly a c6?) it runs but the cross over in the fuel system or something went bad and when u jump on it it starves for gas. so im pulling the motor and tranny. Ive read that the RV 460s are good. there built for pulling,hauling.. would that oil pan clear my cross member? and will my fatory double hump tranny cross member work???

lol yea i should but that would involve a frt end loader to lift 429 out of the dump truck. but hey. a 460 with a good cam/intake combo, some head porting should be good enough id think.its gonna be more of a street toy.theres nothing like the sound of a BB firing up in a parking lot,or one rolling by someone walking on the side walk. Its my "sleeper" lol. AHH its just a little cam in a 302"wink-wink"

The stock 460 pan will not work.. Its a front sump pan and ours our rear sump pans.. You will have to get a pan kit from Moroso.. It will come with everything you need. You can make the double hump crossmember work with slight modifications, but you have to relocate the crossmember mounts farther rearward as this combo with the c-6 is longer than a sm.block and c-4.. |
