Where to find information on imports

So I guess what I'm trying to get from this post is an answer to the question.... What's under his hood?

I just got done learning about American cars and can easily identify what is under the hood of a mustang, camero, trans am etc...

But, now I guess I wan't to "learn the enemy"

Does anyone know any sites that are good for a crash course on import engines???

Just listen to them shift. If it sound like some kind of power adder, then you know. Other than that, most imports have the fart cannon and cold air intake. And the hideous body kit. LOL

Look for wheels tucked all the way inside the wheel well, camber/caster 2" in. Toe is all out of whack. Billions of sparks flying everywhere because they got the car .5" from the ground. Look for Huge big ass spoilers on front wheel drive vehicles.

http://www.riceboypage.com/ the guy on that site pretty much sums up what you need to know about what is under the hood of the enemy. For the most part.

Go to Modernracer.com, that will give ya an idea of what other imports run-including: quarter mile times, 0-60 times, braking distances, stock horsepower and torque at the flywheel, curb weights, etc. That site also has advice on driving skills.

What cars are you curious to know about right off hand? Wondering about the 4 banger cars? 6 cylinders?

If it's a car that has AWD, hope you either have a good suspension setup or the guy can't drive. FWD sucks ass, but power will overcome that anyway. If it's a honda, well, I hate those cars myself

If it's an Eclipse/Talon/Laser, well I know plenty about them My Talon was built to destroy Mustangs....never thought I'd be trying to own one. Lol.

I know the h22 (220 hp and even less foot lbs stock) will say dohc small and the vtec will be big. My cousin had one in his old school integra and it was fast but he was always breaking stuff. People think im crazy when I tell them fwd with a lot of hp will not be reliable. cv shafts are weak motor mounts are always breaking and after they went the tps module hit the firewall and now it idels at 3000 rpms. not to mention the annoying exhaust. I would like to see a rice burner get in to the low 13's and keep the exhaust quiet, or atlest get exhaust cutouts for track only. I can make a dodge k-car loud but its still slow. but stickers and loud = fast right?

my other friend has a 98 golf vr6 (v6) and I think it pulled a 15 flat. not to bad , except he thinks he can beat a vette in the 1/4. a bad driver in a 89 vette will pull low 14s stock. anycrap off topic.

I just go to ebay and check out what the engine bays look like, and google that car to see what its like stock (curb weight, hp@what rpm and find out what it does in the 1/4) www.cars.com offers reviews on some makes.

B18's and H22's in honda's paired with a good turbo are quick
SR20DET in nissan's are Turbo and really quick (240SX)
2JZGTE found in supras are horspower beasts (wont see too many on the road)
and the infamous Evo's and WRX's or the STI's are liitle 4 banger Turbos but they are AWD and are quick up top.

Well, Dsm's (Eclipse, Talon, Laser) are 4 cylinders that can be built to run really fast for relatively cheap. Even a small turbo can make them run really quick with proper tuning (which isn't hard with things like Dsmlink, etc.). Awd cars can totally launch out of the hole whether on the track or street. So if you run into an Awd car with a driver that knows he can launch at 5k rpm and up, I hope you have a good setup to get grip as well. Check out www.dsmtimes.org if ya wanna see some of the times these cars can put down.

There's also the WRX STI with Awd and 300 horsepower stock. They have a flat 4 that makes the center of gravity low to the ground. There's the Evo with 270ish horsepower stock and Awd. Dodge Neon Srt-4's (though I hate them with a passion) can be made really fast as well and supposedly you can get different staged upgrades on it from the factory.

There's many many MANY cars that are Imports that can easily hand a Mustang it's ass on a silver platter. I know cause I did it to Stang owners every weekend with my Eclipse. But I swear, most of the 4 banger guys with the wings, tittie lights on the hoods, 1 inch diameter exhaust with a 10 inch tip just drives me insane. There's some all-motor 4 bangers than can run fast but I've personally never seen one.

For the most part, unless it has a turbo on it, you shouldn't have to worry much. I see idiots who think they can run fast just because they have nitrous on their 100 horsepower motor. Sheesh! Please!!!

Oh, and let's not forget about RX-7's. They're light, and can be made fast very cheaply with just a bunch of bolt-on's cause they don't have pistons, rods, crank, cams, valves, valve springs, etc. to have to worry about. The 3rd gen 7's cost a bit more to mod but the older ones can be made to go fast for next to nothing with it's 1.3 liter motor and they can rev really high.

Honda's? Well, I'll just say I hate em. Only fast Honda I've seen is a turbo's Honda. I've seen em run fast but ONLY the turbo'd ones.

Miata's can bolt on a supercharger and be really quick cause they're already light but I've never seen one. But on a totally curvy track, they're gonna destroy a Mustang. I rode with a guy in one at an SCCA event a few years back cause no one else would let me ride in their mustang, etc. I was disappointed UNTIL he hit the gas. He was the fastest guy out there on the course for the whole day. I was really impressed. Straight line though? That would've been a different story.

Nissan 300ZX's and Supra's, well, I'm sure you know about them already. It's the 4 bangers that people think are slow but my advice would be to just be on the lookout if ya see one with a turbo or awd.

As a former Evo owner and a fairly powerful one at that, YOU gotta have stick to beat an AWD outta the hole. Not braggin or pickin a fight, but my ex has damn near a 600HP 02 GT and runs on M/T drag radials. All the time. I would get her from a launch EVERY TIME. I would be fine till she banged out 3rd. then game over. An Evo, STi, or a fairly mild WRX will have a high top end potential. Evos will wind to 7600 stock. The factory engine is capable of sustaining nearly 700RPM's more, but that is pushin it.
