Well first off theres no cable for the tach it runs off your - (negative) side of your coil. But your speedometer cable is located on the drivers side mid-tranny. One bolt holds a u clip around the cable.

Well the the bolt out and check the speedometer gear for broken teeth or wear. If no signs of wear your gonna have to take you instrument cluster out and check your connection at the back of the gauge. Theres a white plastic clip thats around the cable holding it in place on the gauge. If your connections good then i would replace the cable it may be broken. I'd replace the cable before you re-install the instrument cluster if the speedometer dont work after checking everything. You would have to have the instrument cluster out to replace it any ways. Its not always the cable your gauge could just be broke UNLIKELY but possible.

When I got my stang, when I was driving down the road you could usually hear this 'tick. . .tick. . ..tick .. .' like a clock. That was my needle bouncing from 0 to 140. Eventually I replaced the cable to the trans and the gear. Then my speed would only wobble +/-5 mph of my speed, maybe a little more. Usually more.

The guys I asked about said that after replacing that other hardware, the problem is in the speedo itself, on the back of the cluster. Unfortunately, I think I may have helped my speedo cable kink so now I have no speedo whatsoever. Static zero. But I still have my original tach going strong and that's all I need with my 5 speed. "No officer, I have NO IDEA how fast I was going. What's 4000 in 4th?..." etc.

So if you go fiddle with things, take a look at how the cable lies before you get started. Make sure it hangs back close to it's original location and of course if you remove it, run it back the way it came out.

Do you have different gears in the rear end? That will make your speedometer way off.

nope its a 4cyl cluster and stock rear, the previous owner said its not off it just jumps due to the bent u-joint...and by the way how high on my list of things to do should the rearend be? it needs an 8.8, headers, powersteering pump, carb and paint in order to be ready for some poweradders. should i go rear then paint or vise-versa?

paint has never been important to me. I would take performance over looks anyday...Kinda like a sleeper to me.

yeah sleepers are nice. but on one hand, if the essentials are there to make it run good, why not make it look good right ups the value. On the other hand yeah just like you said somthing that out performs its looks by far would be great too. i dont know which way to go, how fragile is the 7.5 rearend i break somthing all stock?

I would put an 8.8 in there before anything...especially if you plan on modding it. I don't know if you have listed your mods or plans for the car...i forget easily...but an 8.8 would really be needed if you plan on modding this car.

Speedometer "jumping" is usually a bad speedometer cable.

Also a "bent" u-joint will not have any effect on the speedometer reading.
