5spd rough in reverse

Hey guys, on my 87 gt it seems alot of times when I go to put it in reverse its either hard to find or will make a grinding sound. Sometimes, if i shake the shifter back in forth in neutral a few times i can drop it in without a a problem. The gear doesnt slip, its just noisy when it the shifter goes in. Any ideas?

???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same exact issue. But for me, when I am trying to get it in reverse it won't go, but if I barely let off the clutch while firmly pushing down, it will "fall" into the reverse. Also, yes very badly does that gear grind when i get it in reverse.

It happens to me usually after already driving the car. The first time like int he mornings when I leave, it doesen't grind so x2 for lnsnedrmr.

you can either put the car inreverse before yoy start it, or before shifting, put the car in a forward gear then quickly shift into reverse. With the engine running, the car in neutral, and the clutch pressed, the input shaft will still spin a little, so when you put it into reverse, the trans has to stop spinning one way so the gears can sync up, putting the car in a forward gear also stops the trands from spinning, then shifting into reverse quickly will not allow the trans to start spinning again

I agree that putting it in a forward gear first will help. Mine likes 4th, then reverse. Or if you can roll a little, move the stick to reverse, even if you can't go all the way in. Hold it in place and roll backwards a little and keep slight tug on the stick, and you'll feel it drop in nice and easy.

Is this just bad synchros for us?

Yeah I normally start the car already in reverse and that always works of course but let's all face it. It's time to pick up our 5.0 Mustang magazines and order that rebuilt T5 for $799.99 and I would get it in a minute. or the Ford Racing T5 for $1,200 from summit

i found double clutching works well to engage it in reverse easier

Also, you may have to stock "adjust" your clutch. My 88 GT allows me to foot pull the clutch up and I have to very slowly press it in until it hits the floor. That's worked too
