I just bought my first mustang it is a 1989 lx 5.0 that me and my dad built it was a 4 cylinder and we swaped the motor but any way we took the stock rearend out and put is a 8.8 and i drove it for about 200 miles before it has sat for 2 years now but when i was driving it whenever you got off the clutch the rearend made a wierd clunk and i was wondering if any one had any idea what this noise could be

stop driving it! what ever you do! check the drive shaft, it sounds like you are walking the shaft, if not it could be the ring and pinion.

Driveline clunk is common in quite a few models to include my '00. I once asked a speed shop tech about it and he had a very detailed explanation concerning the frames used being a bit too long and such, and the driveshaft having some play, but I cant remember the exact details.

My '00 is also my 1st and I freaked when I first heard it. I would hear it bad if I lifted in 5th and then mashed the pedal again. I got used to adjusting how I lift and feather the throttle and I dont even notice it now. I can still drive it as hard as I want without hearing it.

now that I think about it more that is pretty common, out of all the manual tranny stangs that Ive had (86, 85, 92, 03), they all had that clunk
