U Joints

How long do your U joints typically last?

I have about 30k on mine and they are making a grinding noise. I am not buying any more drive train or suspension parts from Auto Zone

FYI it is a 5 speed car. Never been to the strip but it isn't a stranger to being driven hard.

nah, the diff should be good. it is not making any typical diff noises. I had the cover off of the rear a few months ago and everything looked normal. the noise is only present when accelerating and i am getting a high frequency vibration.

I haven't had a rear wheel drive car as a daily driver in forever that is why i was asking how long u joints are expected to last.

update because you all care so very much about my u joints.... I changed them yesterday after work. One of the universal caps on the fwd joint had nothing but rusty dust inside where the needle bearings were supposed to be. Loks like the fwd one will have to be swapped out every 30k to be on the safe side. The new one in the rear is greasable so it will stay in there as long as I can keep flowing grease through it.

yeah, I hear you. Fapsmithing doesn't pay what it used too. I am sitting tight at my job. They are laying off 20% in the next couple of months.

Not if you install one with a zerk.

The new one in the rear is greasable so it will stay in there as long as I can keep flowing grease through it.
Cool, you went zerk. Should last about 3 times longer (as a D/D), long as you hit it once/month with some good lube.

Yeah, the front one didnt come w one. Probably because it is more difficult to get to. I will be keeping my eye out for one w a zerk. I saw some with 2 zerks installed so that they can be greased from what ever side is easier. I am going to get a flex hose for my gun too so it will be a little easier to get at the front one.

Mine has the ones without grease nips as well.. previous owner went the cheap route I guess.

I pulled the front U-joint off about a month ago to replace the tranny yoke, because it was worn down about 0.5mm and was giving me a slight but annoying (for me) vibration at anything over 65 mph. The U-joint caps and bearings were still full of grease.

I like the ones with grease nips... with proper lubrication, u-joints will last a long, long time.
