Removing rear drums

Okay, I'm replacing the shoes, and I cannot figure out how to remove the drums. The bolts are extremely tight, and WD40's not helping too much. I can't fit a ratchet behind there, so I have to use a standard wrench...

Is there a specific way to remove these... :-/

bolts wtf? you see that wheel looking thing at the bottom? that adjusts how far out the shoes are, adjust the shit out of it and they should pop off, otherwise hit around the edges from behind with a hammer, its really simple

There are no bolts to remove except the lug nuts and the wheel, the drums should slide right off. Make sure the car is sturdy and you have the e-brake off. If the e-brake is off and they still do not come off, you will have to lossen the self adjusters with a small flat screwdriver or tap on the drum with a mallet. Further direction and more detail can be given if that is the case. Its too late now but never use WD40 anywhere near the brakes, drums, or rotors.

EDIT: By e-brake off, I mean the handle in the car is the whole way down, not the e-brake cable or anything like that.

Sounds like he was trying to loosen the backing plate bolts

Mine had some clip like things holding the drum in place....they screwed where the lug nuts bolt on too. We hit them counterclockwise with a screwdriver and a hammer.

Haha, yes. I think I've been using this name since I was probably 12... LOL.

So, I took the drums off, and they were so badly worn down. In addition, the rear left cylinder was leaking fluid, it was everywhere inside the drum, and like suspected the shoes were pretty much bare metal.

So, to make this less of a clusterfuck for me, seeing as I (obviously) know nothing about brakes, I decided the best thing to do would be to take it in to my mechanic.

It'll come out to about $250 with parts and labor... It's a price, but I'd rather avoid (further) headache. Getting those springs back on, along with the drums was a major pain in the ass.

Plus, considering these are the original drums... well.. what can you expect?

if you have the time you can probably put together a rear disk setup for around that cost.

That's not a bad price, if he includes flushing the whole system.
