GT40P Heads

HI, Wondering if these heads are worth $300 ? These heads came off an 1996 ford explorer. The heads have a gt40p stamped on the inside. Casting number on the bottom of the heads is F77E. These heads have been vatted, steel blasted, magnafluxed, and pressure tested. Also have 3-angle valve job, new valve stem seals, and have been milled. I can purchase them for that but was wondering if they would work for me. I know that I would be limited on what headers that I could use..Would I be better off with long tube headers or the shorty ones ?
I plan on getting roller rockers..1.6 or 1.7 ??? Not sure on which to get.. A new GT40 Intake, upper and lower, Underdrive pullies, CAI, Will use stock injectors for now. I have an automatic trans and will probably go with 4.10 gears. What other upgrades would be a good match for what I have listed..? I really would like a good street car with an occassional trip to the dragstrip and not be laughed at...Not really concerned about fuel mileage as it will only be used for short trips back and forth to work..
Thanx for any input that you might have..
Tom

300 isnt bad for prepped and ready set of p heads that is about 300 alone in machene work. the matching explorer intake will work just fine and should bring you in the 12's with a set of gears

the Comp Cams XE270-12 cam has made good power for that combo. Make sure the springs are set up right.

Thanx for the advice Tmoss.. What do you mean about the springs being setup right? Should I bring them to a shop and maybe install better springs? Thanx Tom

When you select your cam, bring the cam card to a machine shop, and they can tell you what springs to buy. Worst case, you sell the old springs. I'm sure 9000 people on corral will want the old ones.

Comp cams XE series have very steep ramps and even Comp tends to not recommend enough spring to handle rpms over ~6k.

I'd expect he would have thrown that cam in the trash can. See if he'll tell you what a mistake your making with those parts..........

If I stay with the stock cam in my car should I go with the 1.6 Roller rockers or the 1.7 ones ?? This would be using the stock springs on the GT40P heads..Is this an option ?? Thanx, Tom

Yes stock springs as were on the GT40P heads. I'll look into getting better ones.. I think TMoss suggested some Trickflow ones at one point.. Will I be able to run the 1.7's without any issues? Should I buy pushrod giudeplates ? Will I need new pushrods? What's agood place to maybe pickup these items up all at once ? Thank-you, Tom
