The syncros are prob worn or something. Change fluid and see if shifter is adjusted correctly if it an aftermarket one. Some if not all of them have an adjustment for the shifter stops..

What I've found from researching this in the past...

The T5 maintenance manual (found at http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English...er/product.asp) states:
"Most T5 transmission models use Dexron II automatic
transmission fluid. Refer the vehicle owner’s manual
or service manual for lubricant specifications."

My 1991 Mustang owners manual states Mercon.

Dexron III replaced Dexron II and both are fully compatible with Fords version called Mercon. Basically, Mercon and Dexron III are the same thing.

Funny thing though is that Google searches for T5 fluid type will turn up possible suggestions for just about every type and brand of manual and AT transmission fluid ever made. Even plain old gear oil. Ouch.

Quantity? I changed mine out and I believe it took almost 3 qts.

I agree.

Unless you have a modified/rebuilt T5 and the person that modified it specifically suggests something else (and is willing to back up their work), I'd stay with Dexron III/Mercon.

Although... a lot of people use Synchomesh in a T5 as well. I'd don't feel comfortable enough with "I've used Synchomesh with no problems and so has my friend" as a reason to use it myself. To each his own I guess.
