I believe they are 3 speed with overdrive(4 speed). Anyways they are always wimpy or atleast mine is.

If your 89 is auto than it came with a AOD which like posted above is a three speed w/ OD (technically 4 spd). AOD's can be built to handle alot of power and can be very nice for street/track use. Depending on how far you want to go with a rebuild or parts. You can go one route and just do a shift kit or aftermarket valve body w/ a nice converter and gears and it will really wake your car up ALOT. Or you can go with something from PA Transmissions or Lentech... I would personally go w/ a nice 3K stall (or something in that area depending on your setup) w/ a nice manual valve body from PA or Lentech. There are guys running 400hp through stock AOD's w/ minor work done to them.
