t5 questions

a guy has a t5 for sale from a 98 or 99.
will this fit my 87 5.0? also is there a way to tell the difference from a 5speed from a 2.3l to a 5.0L apperntly there is a shaft diameter difference.

think the input spline count is different with the 98 to 99. as far as the 2.3 and 5.0 tranny im pretty sure the input shaft is longer on the 2.3 but if you use a pilot bearing from an 83 ranger diesel it will work the 4 banger one is weaker but you can rebuild it to v8 specs.

I thought the V6 T5s were the same as the V8 T5s, that only the 4-cylinder ones were weaker?

You're not lost - mod motors did use the T45, but the 3.8 V6 continued to use the T5.

It will work, but I wouldn't do it, waste of time and effort.

the 94-04 V6 mustang trans are the same as the 94-95 Mustang GT V8 T5. All have the longer inputshaft and different bearing retainer. It could be swapped if you get the bellhousing and whatnots from the donor car. But it will set your shifter 5/8" back in the shifter hole in the floor....

would that be a big problem tho? I understand you would have to cut the center but would it still work fine?

Drive shaft would have to be shorter, the shifter bezel in the console might interfer, trans mount location might have to be modified....

if its the same, how does it put the shifter back 5/8th of an inch, is the length different or is the location of the shifter the only difference

If you swap the input shaft and front bearing retainer, then you will be able to use the newer trans. When the SN95's were built the trans needed to be set back that much to give a comfortable driver position because of the steering colum. That is why you have to get the specific bell housing also. a google search and a little time will give you all the information that you will need..
