Are all junkyards personel retarded? Every yard that I have contact for the explorer intake they all tell me that there are 3 different lower and 2 different upper. They ask me for casting number. Does anyone know the casting # or is it any 97 1/2 5.0 intake?

I thought all Explorer 5 liter intakes were the same and just the heads were different. I wonder what the differences in the intakes are.

Yeah, from all my research I've only heard of GT40s vs GT40Ps. I can't remember hearing about different types of intakes on Explorers / Mountaineers.

As far as the topic creator's wanting "emission provision." I'm not sure what you're refering too. What is the sensor in the lower intake, I forget the acronym. I'm pretty sure you have to drill that yourself.

some have the egr port, some don't.

my explorer intake does not have the center egr port, but the stock one next to it does:

This is what the junkyard guy sees in the computer when he looks up a 1998 Explorer intake manifold.
6-244 (4.0L), SOHC, upper
6-244 (4.0L), SOHC, lower
6-244 (4.0L), OHV, upper
6-244 (4.0L), OHV, lower
8-302 (5.0L), upper, thru 5/7/98
8-302 (5.0L), lower, ID F67E-BB
8-302 (5.0L), lower, ID F87E-CA
8-302 (5.0L), lower, ID XL2E-AB
8-302 (5.0L), upper, from 5/8/98
This is taken from Car-Part. com a website which allows you to search junkyards inventory without messing with the sales person. I was one of those dumb junkyard guys at one time. If they look into the Hollander notes they can probably tell you the difference if they know how to work the system properly.

Late 97 up 5.0 Explorers and Mountaineers have an internal EGR ehxaust passage (the intake shown above with the hole).Early 97 and back have an external EGR valve and an exhaust tube that comes off the RH exhaust manifold and goes up to the valve.(The intake shown without the hole) If you are going to run an EGR system you will need the later design (with the hole)unless you want to rig up some sort of feed off your headers.(a pain) I have 6 late ones and one early design.I bought a bunch of 99-00 5.0 Explorers a few years back at the salvage pool as I was fixing them for sale. One of them is my winter ride now.I took a 1997 5.0 chassis and put a 99 body on it.Painted it two tone Shadow Blue/Smoke grey to match my '88 GT convt. Mustang. That way I don't miss the 'Stang as much all winter...

15 minute edit.Only forum I have ever joined with that stipulation.I personally would go with an after market intake or a gt-40.I have a trickflow track heat, but if I had to do over,I would go with a gt-40.(or that BBK cross ram X unit;looks good and it works!)

no reason to get the gt40 over an explorer intake except for looks. they perform virtually identically:

Yea,I know the Explorer intakes are strong runners, but their so DAMN ugly..and heavy.i still think the gt-40 is the best damn all around intake out there for the 5.0.

true, the gt40 is the best looking manifold available and one of the lightest. there is one advantage to the explorer though, and that is that you can port the upper.
