info needed....EFI to Carb conversion
hi... I have a 88 Thunderbird with the 5.0 EFI and I want to convert to a carb set-up...
I want to use a Edlebrock Performer manifold and a Holley 600cfm with elect choke. I want to use a MSD dist with their 6A box. I want to limit the amount of wire cutting...I don't want the factory computer to work at all... can this be done?? |

yes it can, scrap all the vacuum hoses, and covert to a chevy style HEI distributor, or a Duraspark distributor which is a little better. The HEI distributor just needs three wires, and a vacuum for the timing advance, it easy do to.

Or just get an MSD mechanical dizzy and run a very limited timing curve.
You can still have all your factory gauges work too if you can find the right wires...

I'm in the process of doing a carb conversion.
What you're going to need to do is get rid of the MAF, the fuel rails, fuel injectors, the obvious stuff. Get rid of the engine harness and ECU as it'll be useless and dead weight. Remove the electronic distributor and everything from the lower intake manifold up. So long as you get a short intake manifold, you shouldn't have problems with hood clearance. If you do, then get convertible engine mounts and the engine will sit lower. Here's a list of what you'll need, -Intake Manifold for Carb -Carburater (600 is good for stock-ish motor) -You can use the OEM fuel pump just use a really good FPR with a return line to the tank as a carb only requires 6-8psi fuel pressure -Block off the EGR completely (Did I say that out loud?) -Find nuts to plug the O2 bungs -Find a distributor with vacuum advance since you will be deleting the ECU -Get a duraspark or MSD ignition box -Get a air cleaner for carb -Find a 1985 or earlier GT and grab the throttle cable for carb as well as fuel hardlines to the FPR This is what I'm doing, you might do it differently, but I'm wiring my fuel pump, ignitions, and electric fan into a switch board so I can just turn them on when I want to start the car. If I've forgotten anything I'll let you know, but that's about it. If you could find a 1985 or earlier donor car, that would be best since you'd have everything right there. Another way you could deal with the fuel pressure issue would be to drop the tank and swap it with a tank from a pre-1985 GT for the pull through fuel line, and then hook up an electric fuel pump for about 8psi. I personally think the FPR route would be much easier and less hassle, it's the route I'm going. You can still use the same roller cam, same heads, bottom end, etc... nothing there has to change. This is a copy/paste of what I posted in the fuel injection to carb swap thread.
