convertible help
First, I'm new here. Great site. I recently purchased an '89 lx convertible for $500. Needless to say it needs a lot of work. But, first I have to make it not leak when it rains(currently the top is done up in duct tape and cardboard). The convertible frame was shotty at best. I just purchased a convertible top frame from a salvage yard for $250. From what I understand most people would rather shoot themselves in the foot instead of installing a 'vert top. Due to funds, or lack thereof, I have to do it myself. Does anyone now of directions or video of 'vert top installation?

i've been having this exact problem with my car, mine is nowhere near as bad as urs so I have a little bit more time to gather some money. I have the top just sitting in my garage because everyone I've spoken to including the guys at the local speed shops say there is NO way to possibly stretch it by hand, they have to be machined and steamed to stretch. You can always try to get a few people to help you but one of the other guys on this forum said u'll only end up ripping the top and having to pay to get someone to do it for you anyways. Idk good luck and let us know if everything works out

I've got time, just not money. This is not my primary car. Some shops have quoted me as much as $1200. I'm in the military so I'm always broke.

For $500.00 you can't go wrong with the vert, I have a 83 vert which will need a roof next summer. They are cheap to buy but everyone says to seek professional help to put it on or you will need professional help after you try to do it! Good luck and if you find any tricks for us do it your self type please let us know.

Represent the drop top Mustang community.
I bought mine for $700 and my top looks worse than yours. I have no rear window or corner sections. I just got a car cover put the top down and installed the boot it looks much nicer that way. But on to your question I found some sites that give vague descriptions but I can't access it today I'll give you the info tommorrow.

I'm gonna have to tackle the install myself. I'll take plenty of pics, though. Just waiting for tax return to come in within the week so I can order the whole new top kit. I'm not sure, nor have I read, if it is easier to install the top with the frame on or off the car. Probably easier with the frame on the car. As soon as I get the top on, I can move on to beefing up the suspension. I hate spending money on parts that aren't fun or fast, ie. the convertible top.
