newer heads older block

so a week ago i had a lifter stick right, i went bought me a set of nice roller lifters, my brother told me thats what i needed because the heads have the smog pipe on the back of the heads, thats why we thought its a newer motor in the older car, well we get the top tore down and pull the stuck lifter out, thats when alot of cussing went on, flat top lifters, so now were totally confused to wtf the guy before us did with this car and whats on it, old block with newer heads???? and how can we tell what kind of heads they are because they seem alittle wider then they should because the header touches the frame on the starter side and hits the hell out of the steering, all in all we got a new lifter got it running and its running damn good so we shall wait and see and figure out what we actually have

sounds to me like a fuel injected 5.0 engine.. not a 5.0 HO, as the non HO engines have the tube that runs along the back side of the engine connecting the two heads as you described.
