Mustang Smoking

I have just bought a '95 mustang. It looked nice when I bought it. Lots of stuff done and replaced. However a short while of driving I soon realsied it is smoking quite a bit. It does not smoke when driving along at steady speeds, but if you suddenly push the gas hard it will smoke for about 2-3 seconds then clear up. When it smkes it seems to have a bit of a splutter...aroung the 3000 rpm mark. Then also when you stop at a light or something then pull away it will smoke in maybe second or thrid gear, again for about 2-3 seconds then stop.

Does anyone have any idea if the motor is bad or could there be something else causing it like a valve seal or something.

Welcome to the forums. Could be a number of things. Is the exhaust stock? Does it have a Check Engine light?

It has a magnaflow exhaust on it...no cats, just straight pipe. I do have the check engine light on but have been advised it is because there is no O2 sensor in there.

It could be way too many things. Check the codes and see what they say.

+1

Take it to auto zone or another parts store, and get them to read what the codes say. If you have no O2 sensors then the engine cannot tune itself...

I'm guessing it's brown/black smoke? Never run the car with no 02 sensors. Or in your case "Sensor".

The smoke is white and definitley oil. My wife drove the car and I was behind. It gave such a puff I could not see where I was going. How do I get an O2 sensor back in if I have straight pipes with no cats? Where does it go?

How much oil does it use? If it smokes that bad and it is indeed oil smoke, its gotta be burning at LEAST a quart every tank of gas..

Pure white smoke is antifreeze, blueish white smoke is oil. Check your dipstick and see what your oil looks like.

Very true if you are having to add water to the car and if the oil is milk then could be a chance that there a blown head gasket maybe an intake problem.

Water and coolant will evaporate a whole faster in the atmosphere then say oil, which wont burn anymore then it already has.

So if it was a cloud covering the chase car, I'd say it's oil.

I had a dodge D-50 for a beater truck it cracked a head and smoked all the way from town to the house not just when under a load. So I am going to agree with flattusmaximus78 and say oil. You can always do the smell test lol

I have checked out my anti freeze and it is still on the full mark.... So head gasket should be okay. In this case it would be nice if it was only the head gasket. It uses a quart of oil every second tank of gas.....

So I am assumuing it is new motor time then???? I was going to put a new one in sometime but now it may be sooner than expected. I was looking at getting a new block and getting a 347 low compression stroker in it then dropping a kenne bell s/c and pushing about 15 psi into the motor. Hopefully this would be a nice set up.... Time to start doing all my homework and getting it all together then.

Thanks for all the replies guys.Hopefully if you guys have a mustang get together in central Florida I will be there.

Rob

lol, I'm gonna guess you've never blown a head gasket before... Antifreeze can cause thick white smoke that can block out traffic behind you pretty much completely.

That would mean it's time for a valve job or new rings, or both.

Or you could turn it into a great excuse to upgrade

I've never blown any head gaskets. Doesn't mean I can't tell the difference between oil and coolant. Oil; has a bluish screen to it, not to mention coolant making it's way through the exhaust smells like straight syrup. So no matter what point your trying to make, it doesnt matter. Anything else?

edit: I highly doubt valve seals will fix anything. 2 tanks of gas is prob 2 weeks of driving. IF I'm correc then thats a quart in 2 weeks. Thats a whole lot of oil.
