Fiberglass bondo'ing in my basement
Hey guys, a few weeks ago i posted about using bondo to fill a hole under hte driver seat while working in my basement. Everyone recommended getting cut and welded so it would be waterproof, but I have no way to get the car anywhere or to have anyone come here. Someone else mentioned Bondo fiberglass resin, and thats what I picked up. My question is, how would I go about using it. It says to spread a layer, lay down fiber glass, then spread another layer. Thats simple...but how would i spread it over the hole? Thanks.

Take a lil bit of chicken wire or get a sheet of the metal patchfill stuff where you got the bondo. Place it over the hole and commence to spreadin the stuff

you should actually have went & gotten a product called MAR-GLASS.. it's almost just like bondo but has fiberglass strands in it.. you should definately get this stuff, i know personally that it will fill that hole no problem.... get the hardener & spread it & mix it just like bondo... once it dries up sand it down a little & then re-apply another coat if necissary... you'll be good...

If your not trying to weld it you could get a piece of sheetmetal and screw it up from the bottom to cover the hole. Than use the fiberglass filler to harden everything. That will work, maybe not great but it will work. Why couldnt you have it cut & welded. You wouldnt get charged much at all. Is it non driveable?

you need to go to your local collision repair shop and say hey bud how much $ do you want for a tube of liquid seam sealer, should run about 15 to 20 bucks there are adhesives that are stronger that any weld. be carefull this stuff comes in two tubes and once it is pushed through the mixing tubeit will be hard as a rock in a matter of seconds, just take a piece of sheet metal and lay it in there and apply it. dont drill any holes, thats just another place for it to leak! this is the way to go ive done this several times in jeeps

Yea right now the car cannot be driven...it has no seats, or seat belts. I found this hole after pulling out the carpeting.
I have the fiberglass mat...dont I need to dip that in the bondo or something? I pretty lost on this. Bondo is simple...but using bondo with fiberglass mat and filing holes...im a little lost. Would it be better to cover them fom under the car..or inside the car? |

Depend; hows your welding skills? Filling the hole is w/ bondo or fiberglass not the best, but its pretty cheap. Welding in a plate or using a metal filler w/ weld is more ideal.
The fiberglass is the exact same thing they use on Unique Whips to "make" their speaker boxes. It is the same principle as bondo, just a different chemical. It gets hard when it dries and can be sanded and painted. It will be fairly sturdy, but it will not be load bearing. Fill the hole completely. Inside and out. Lessens the chance for moisture.

ok check this out. fiberglass does not adhere to metal. let me say that again for anyone who didnt hear.. fiberglass does not stick to metal. i should know, im an airframes mechanic on military aircraft. i agree with the metal and the screws (or rivets) if you try to layer on fiberglass over corroded metal or metal at all, it will seal up the hole untill the car starts to twist and bend as you drive. not too long after, the fiberglass will come apart and youll be back with a hole.
i dont mean to be rude, but do it right, or dont do it at all. if you really have to use fiberglass on metal, like i have for my cowl hood.. use pop rivets (cherry max) and layer down sealant between the metal and the fiberglass. this means you have to impregnate and form the fiberglass FIRST. let it cure, sand all the excess resin off.. then drill your rivet holes putting something through the holes (klekos) to keep everything in place. you can do the same thing with a metal patch. if you want it to look professional in any manner, countersink the holes you drill and use countersunk rivets.. theyll sit flush with the patch, and you can sand it all smooth and primer and paint. no harm no foul and noones the wiser.

I used the fiberglass jelly bondo with 2 sheets of fiberglass on the inside, and im gonna be using ultimate bondo under the car. I figure this should keep it pretty stiff, ill be priming and undercoating the car as well.
My question is, why wouldnt the fiberglass bondo hold under body flex if they make full cars out of fiberglass material? I figure with a few layers it should hold. |

Because the body panels are made from large multi layered sheets. they are pressed so that all the exess resin is gone leaving a solid, ridgid ,stress dispursing panel. Using filler on a small hole is ok I bet it never pops out if done right.
