300whp Or So Buget Project

well my son has now caught the 5.0 volvo bug like me . unlike me hes on a budjet and since i boosted my 5.0 via supercharger, i'm asking for yalls help with his new project.

Car: 1984 volvo 242(4.10's in the rear already!)

Goal: 300whp N/A
please name the cheapest comboes

thanks, Ben

P.S. i'm gonna get him a nitrous kit if he successfully does this on his own, so no that it'll probably have the bottle later (after the 300whp)

300whp isn't tough...on a budget, well that's a different story. expect to spend some $$$ on heads. most of the cheaper stock heads (explorer GT40, ported stockers) probably won't make 300 without nailing the tune and picking the absolute perfect combo...it can be done, but its usually cheapest just to get the aftermarket aluminum heads (i recommend AFR or trickflow). other than that your goal can be acheived fairly cheap. explorer intakes are good, cheap, and plentiful (they share the exact same design as a cobra or gt40 intake). you could probably get away with a stock cam, or an "Off The Shelf" cam like the TFS1 cam should be good for you. also upgrade the MAF meter and the exhaust and you should be done.

edit: you didn't mention whether it would be carb'd or EFI. i assumed the latter, but a carb setup would be that much cheaper.

if you read the topic 300WHP is what it says. With edelbrock performer heads,a performer air gap intake,a BG 650 speed demon carb, and a comp cams XE264hr cam MM&FF
made 384FWHP and 364 FWTQ

Buy a Trick Flow Street Heat Kit. Heads, cam, intake, timing pieces. Longtubes and a Bassani X-pipe sans Cats shoould get you where you want to be.

Anything GT40 won't touch the TFS or AFR's for flow. For budget set, I'd go GT40P. The Ford GT40 heads are pricey, (as pricey or pricier than a lot of Aluminum heads) and only net ~50HP.

GT40P can get you to 300rwhp if you pick everything out intelligently. You can get a TFS top end kit and hit 300rwhp damn near as soon as you crank the engine and time it. May want to get some help for your air induction and fuel system though.

But like I asked before about the budget. . . what do you want to spend? It's up to your son to figure out what he wants to do. I'd rather not buy the top end kit because that just takes all the fun out of getting your own setup together.

a budget a build for a 302 is not that bad. the heads are gonna kill u. the best heads out there though for cheap would be the world windsor seniors or juniors, juniors for this mild 302 build. they make just as much if not more power than afr's and are 1/3 of the cost. second if u have to worry about emissions than a trick flow 1 cam is the way to go. than hit the junkyard and get an explorer intake and 24 lb injectors. and have fun.

First of all, asking about Thumper heads on here is like asking for flames. You've been warned.

Secondly, when you post something and then want to add something just a few minutes later, look at your last post and hit the Edit button. Just amend you message with whatever else you want and Submit it again.

Lastly, What are you looking for? A complete bolt on list?

thumper heads are good heads. the gt40 heads are worth the 600 or so to have them ported and valve job and worked. u can get a whole lot of poewr with them.
