you could get away with running 87 octane if you really wanted.

it looks like the compression ratio in your car is the same as my 93' probe GT, which is around 9:1, and I ran 87 in there.

87 is best unless you get pinging while running it, then maybe 89. It's best to go as low as possible, too much octane can hurt power and cause other issues long term.

I just got some 87 and drove around for a bit....no pinging at all.

I guess I'll stick with the 87.

more octane means you can run more timing...more timing=more HP. go with as much octane and timing as you can afford. my2cents

Precisely, though without more timing you're wasting money and probably power. My car lost 8hp on race gas until the timing was added. 4* timing made another 40hp.

True statement. Internal combustion engines are the most efficient when they are on the verge of detonation. But you can't tell some people that because they think "race gas" makes you go fast....

Not that "race gas" doesn't have the potential for more power, but you can't just put the gas in there and expect wild power.

In order to get the most power from your gas, you need to match your timing to the potential of the octane used in your engine. Racing fuel will give you a little more power without modification, but to get the full benefit of racing fuel, you new to advance the timing. Advancing the timing gets the engine to burn the fuel in a manner that harnesses the most power possible (as Darrell said, right before detonation).

Of course, this applies to all levels of gas, 87 - 93 (ha!! never realized that before!!) and 103+ octane. The topic creator asked about a stock 88, which can get by with 87. But for anyone else out there who has a non stock 'stang, see how far you can go with octane and timing before detonation shows up.

Hell no. That sounds about right, if you want to keep that timing. You may be able to squeeze a little more timing out of there, but that's a safe setup.

Wait, what the fuck? Tony's just wasting our time. . ."too much octane"? From pump gas?

well i just wanted to double check. Above said too much could end up hurting engine....But i was told that i had it right a long time ago, just wanted to check while we were on topic
I bet i could go up to 15-16 degrees. No pinging, it runs pretty good. I might try it tomorrow if i dont run into too much work already!

Yeah, I'd like some justification for that. At least some clarification between "running too much octane" and "not setting your timing to the amount of octane you're running."

I could come up with an argument about how running 103 octance at stock timing would hurt our engines, but maybe he had something else in mind.

FWIW my timing is set to 18* and i usually use 92, sometimes 93 octane. but every engine is different. only way to get it right is to test and tune

Sure, if you get away with it. If you're all stock then you shouldn't have a problem.
