couple questions..roll cage and timing..

so i went to the track the other day and watched a 69 camaro hit the weall and flip and roll at 120mph..now its got me thinking...i should get a roll bar or some sort of cage. my car isnt that fast..but i would like to know that i would b ok if anything happend...so i was thinking just a 4 point cage or just a bar i guess..something to give me a little piece of mind. i assume weld in is better and stronger then bolt in. my only problem i dont know anyone to weld..nor can i afford something real expensive. i assume the bolt in ones are cheaper?? where can i get them..how hard are they to put in....and i am looking to hopefully keep all the front seats functional and put people in the back....now for question 2...i recently pulled my good motor out and i am going to put it in this car..my problem is the distributor was pulled out and i know it moved so i assume my timing is going to b way off.....and i cant get it to drop into the motor. it wont go all the way down no matter how i turn it...now my question is...if i put it in..and timing is really off..i could breaek a bunch of stuff which i dont want to do..soooo..can i put in the distributor...pull the number 1 spark plug stick something in the hole..turn the crank till the piston is at the top and then make sure the rotor on the distrib is under the number 1 plug wire/ is that how the timing thing works//..then use a light to adjust? sorry timing confises me...i know what it is supposed to do ..but i dont want to try and start it up if its really off and possibled smack my pistons and valves into a jumbled mess. thanks guys. oh and for those who dont know its an 89 converted to mass air.

I can only answer the roll bar part.
First, bolt in's are not much cheaper than welded bars. I dont know where you are from, but I can almost guarantee there is a chassis builder somewhere in your area.

A 4pt weld is bar, done correctly will give you more roll over protection. I have a bolt in, but it just bolts to the floor boards. The floor is not very thick at all, and in a hard roll over, I'm sure it would just punch through the floor. My 4pt. with removable cross bar, and diagonal bar from Autopower is roughly $600. A decent chassis shop could do a 4pt. for the same money.

Do your homework. Go to your local track and ask around where guys are having their cages/bars done. Get as many opinions as you can before you do anything!

yea thats what i thought about them..if i rolled hard it would just go through or tear whatever it is attatched to unless it was welded.

For your timing, set the bottom end on TDC of the compression stroke of #1 cyl. then stab the dizzy in so that the rotor lines up just befor the #1 post on the cap, and after it starts, adjust it with a light.
