Gears for cheap.
I just graduated HS a few days ago, and one of my dad's good friend who has been building rear ends for more or less all his life, said he'd build me a set of gears, whatever ratio I want, I just pay for the parts. Might as well do it right? But I was just wondering what ratio I should use...I was thinking 3.73's but I have these shitty street tires and they're about as wide as a Honda Civic's, so there's no way in hell that I'd beable to hook with these tires and those low(er) gears...Any suggestions?

If you have shitty tires you arent gona hook with 2.73s or 4.88s, thats why you have a spare set of 10 holes with slicks

And they're shitty, yes, but they don't hook half bad with the 2.73's in there now...

Yessir! Tons of people run slicks on a spare set of 10 holes, myself included on my last fox. No fox will hook good on the street when it has a decent amount of power so who cares, you mod it to run at the track anyways

Oh well this helps alot...I've been wanting to get a spare set of DR's or slicks, but I just figured they don't make slicks small enough to fit on stock lx 10 holes...So I figured I was gunna have to set up a 5 lug conversion and then buy a set of Welds or something like that...Where can I get these tires?

You need to think about what your going to be doing later to the car, it will better decide what you get. Along with MPG and driveablity you want. Im going 4.10s, screw MPG

Well I don't drive it alot, so I'm not really crying about MPG...And I'm planning to do quite a bit in the future...But that's not for some time...

That's what I've been told...The guy that's building it for me said that 3.55's or 3.73's would be the best for what I'm working with now...

if you drive an automatic and you get gears chances are that you are going to be cruzing down the freeway at a little to high of an RPM even wit OD on

Yea so I've heard...If I can get these slicks for rims I'll get 4.10's.
My dad had 4.11's on his Z06 and that thing picked up....Fast. haha

Where do you get your info? First off you just say with gears he is going to be at a high RPM in OD on the freeway so does that include 3.27's 3.55's 3.73's 4.10's ? Makes no sense, and second most people running AOD's end up going with 4.10's and a lot of the manuals go with 3.73's so please explain.

The best gear (if there is such a thing) is the one that puts you close to your shift point in 4th gear at the end of the 1/4 mile. Fine tuning is done with the tire size. If you spend a lot more time on the street, pick the combo based on your personal preference that is close enough to make you comfortable.

4.10's sucked balls in a pretty stock 92 gt I used to own.. first gear was completely useless and with the stock cam/heads it ran out of rpm in the quarter with the 4.10s
