coolant leaking here i think.

so does the coolant run from the water pump thru the timing case into the block? it looks like the gasket between the block and the timing casing is leaking a few drops of coolant?

also am i stupid to not change out the water pump while i'm doing that? the water pump is fine, but most likely stock still.

1989 gt 5.0 5-speed (stock for now)

if your car is stock, i would suggest changing all the hoses, and changing coolent. if you have the money yes get a hi flow water pump, but dont get an electric water pump, they wont be as efficient.

The coolant does not go into the timing chain's cover.

Can i just go with a Summit Racing hi-flow water pump they are only $67.

I had been looking for the leak right after driving it, so the coolant drops were blown all over from the wind. Then I guess it is the water pump gasket.

I'll do the a/c delete, hi-flow water pump, 180* thermostat (i think there is a 160* in), and a coolant change.

Make sure you check the gasket coming off the intake manifold where the thermostat is also. Sometimes those leak and its hard to see if its the water pump or that cause the coolant runs down the side of the water pump. A dead giveaway of that (or the hose) leaking is coolant puddling on top of the timing chain housing behind the water pump.

Yeah I did see a tiny puddle on top of the timing case.

It could be coming from where you said but also could be coming from the pump it self.. Replace the pump too...

No! It does. It flows through the cover to the block and is common to have a timing cover to block gasket fail. I just did one last week on my 5.0 Bronco.

SBC don't have coolant through the timing cover, SBF do.

The gasket on the far right is the timing cover gasket and the two round holes in there are your coolant passages, thats your problem.

Thank you, I could have sworn that the timing cover had coolant passages. I thought maybe I was going insane and I'm not at home to check a timing cover gasket. I kinda wondered how the water pump sat on one side of the timing chain cover and magically pushed water around the the block.

Honestly, from what I've heard, those summit cheapy but working water pumps are only for your stock motors, if you plan on power, you might want to invest into another one. Might cost ya more but better for your engine too.

Now that's what I heard, not official since I haven't done it yet but hell my stock w/p does great for what I have.

Don't know, the water pump could be on the way out. Technically, you can take the timing cover off and change the cover to block gasket without removing the water pump, but I would go ahead and change the pump if I didn't know how old it was.

Summit sells a high volume water pump. I have one on my 347 it works fine. They claim it flows 30% more than stock. I also put in a high flow Moroso 180 degree thermostat to aid in the flow of the high flow water pump..
