More questions about Stall converter

Hello all,

so i wrote a thread earlier last week about stall converters and i got some pretty good feedback on how it works and what stall would go good with my 90 ford mustang. Some people on the forum recommended the 2800 stall converter and had my heart set on that. so today i called the transmission shop for a appointment to install a AOD transmission, a Trans Go AOD-HP and a stall converter of 2800. The transmission shop questioned why i was doing so. His response is "if i put a 2800 stall converter in the vehicle, he says everytime i take off from a stop sign it's gonna take off at 2800, which is pretty much like peeling out and if i take off slow, the transmission will feel like it's slipping" and he wouldn't advise a 2800 stall converter as a daily driver. His response to Trans Go AOD-HP is "my shift will be harder than usual and it doesn't really prolong longer life to the transmision." Now i'm totally confused. Maybe if i get a aftermarket converter it won't do that? I heard a few of the ppl on the forum board say that Go Trans AOD-HP is really good.

If your "trans guy" says that about converters, I'd take it somewhere else. He apparently knows nothing about stall converters! I have a 5000 stall converter in my Dart and that takes off almost like a stock converter, as long as you don't have your foot in it. The Trans Go AOD-HP is top notch, don't let him talk you out of it. Go to a reputable shop!

The transmission guy says if i REALLY want to make it at 2800 stall, he can. Maybe the stall converter has to be aftermarket for it not to slip? i think he was talking about the stock AOD torque converter?

Dude, find a different trans shop. Or order one from a reputable business, like Lentech, Performance Automatic, or Art Carr. They have been building AOD's since they first come out!

Or find a trans shop that can give you a stock type rebuild, install a Trans Go AOD-HP shift kit, and find your own stall converter. Precision Industries makes excellent AOD converters and they won't steer you wrong! 1-800-649-7866.

I've been running AOD's for over 15 years and have had very good luck with them.

just got back from the transmission shop. i told him to look into dirtydogperformance.com (alan's website) for a good stall converter. he will give me a call back tomorrow. he says he can adjust the converter to 2200, that's his suggestion and not have any slippage problem. but yea all of u are saying he doesn't know what he's talking about and i believe u guys. i'm just getting a fat fat discount going through him though because i am recommened by my shop to go there.

Buy the good stuff the first time, so you won't have to do it later!

I also had the same problem. My trans shop asked my why would i want to put a higher stall than stock on a "street car".They said i needed a cam to match the convertor? And said, it would be useless for me to install a performance convertor, they are only for racecars.lol.They too said it would leave at the stall the convertor was rated.I was shocked when they said this, and they where actually pretty rude about it too.Its very strange.Needless to say i found a performance shop around here thats gonna install my new vavlebody,2,800 stall, and tranny cooler.
