Oil Filters

Which oil filter out of these three would be best for my 89 Fox, Fram Double Guard Oil Filters?, Fram HP Series Oil Filters? or theK&N Performance Gold Oil Filters? Which one would be the best one? Thanks....

to be honest, I work at a parts store and fram is one of the worst filters around. K&N is over priced but it will only really help for racing applications. If there is a NAPA auto parts store around you get their gold filter. the best filter in my opinion is the NAPA gold for a daily driver car, HANDS DOWN! On top of that they are like $5 or so.

I totally agree. I worked at a parts store for 4yrs. We took apart a Fram, our house brand a K&N and a Purolator. The Fram is a complete piece. The K&N has a very strong case, but no more filtration media over the cheapo houe brand for like $9 less and the Purolator had the best overall construction.

I run a Motorcraft FL-1A and 10W30 Motorcraft oil. Got a friend w/ over 600HP outback on a MOD Motor and uses the same. Diff weight oil tho.

I've read the same thing with Fram filters. There are quite a few forums and sites around that have cut apart and analyzed various filters and the general trend was that in the past, the Frams have been the poorest construction (cardboard end caps and poor bypass/drainback valve design). Of course many of the filter and oil companies change the construction, add new modles (like the HP, TG2 etc..) suppliers, and composition of their products frequently. There are just as many people that trust Fram as there are that do not trust them. How many of those opinions good or bad were formed on testing and analysis or just hear-say from a friend or personal experience is unknown.
I have made a personal choice of filter I use but I have no idea if that is technically the "best" choice.

The forums at www.bobistheoilguy.com is a good place browse around if you have time kill.

The endcap and drainback qualities are exactly what I was referancing to. We did the cut out about 18months back. Fram may have changed their process. I do not know. And I shoulda noted, that the Fram we sliced was the orange, not the HP version stangzilla runs. They may be different.

Good luck in deciding what to use. I got a feelin that this could go on for quite some time and never be truly resolved.

My advice, if its really that important to ya, ask questions, read reports, and use your head. After all, whats the worst that could happen.........

They are very different. I also would not use the regular fram filter..
