Brake pedal goes to the floor after new pads/rotors?
Hello, new here!
My neighbor just got a 87 GT this weekend with 60K on the dash. I helped him replace the front pads and rotors this evening. He just went for a test drive and the pedal immediately goes to the floor. It does stop the car but it has some bad grinding. Along with the pads and rotors, we also replaced the "sway bar links". They are about 8-12" long and hooks into the sway bar in the front near the rotors. One side had the bottom bushings/bolt missing and was completely disconnected. At $9 each, we decided to go ahead and replace both. Any ideas? I would assume maybe one of the pads aren't in correctly for the grinding but that wouldn't explain the pedal going to the floor. Is that signs of air in the brake lines? We didn't remove the calipers as it is obviously not needed. Thanks in advance! |

The first few times pumping the brakes after replacing them, they should firm up. The pads are either in wrong or the caliper is at an angle or shifted if that is even possible. Grinding could also be from one side not working correctly and the other one is, the one that does work can overheat and make a grinding noise as well, specially with ceramic pads. Is there fluid seen anywhere? Maybe the seal for the piston was damaged when you backed in it. Did you have he master cylinder cap off when you pushed the pistons back in? What is the current fluid level, really high or really low?

I'm trying to get my neighbor signed up on here and posting as well. He did say he checked it and it was normal (not high or low I suppose). There was the wheel bearing that went in after we put the new rotor back on. We didn't have extra grease but they were already covered. I wondered if that might have had something to do with it. I figured the pads might not be lined up correctly. I'm guessing we will take another look tomorrow after work.

The fluid level is fine and I do not see any leaks. There is a possibility that one of the lines are tweaked, I'll be sure to take a look at that.
Here is a funny thing. Pumping the breaks will firm them up for a few seconds. Also i went driving and at about 4-500 feet i had pressure again. then they went back to the floor. I will be checking the lines tomorrow as well as bench bleeding them. If neither of those are it my best guess would be the MC. I am 99% sure that it isn't a probelm with pad alignment. the notches on the outside brake pad tell me so ;-). Last edited by Nuclear; August 29th, 2010 at 11:47 PM. |
