The only thing you will notice is a tiny bit of rpm increase at the same cruising RPM. I swapped entire rears between two of my cars once to go from 3.08's to 3.27's. Can't say there was too much of a change. I wouldn't waste my time with that if I were you, though I didn't even know 3.42 was a ratio for our cars.

so would the 3.55s be worth investing in for the 100 bucks he wants for them?

If you want 3.55's than yes. But if you have 3.27's, then probably not... IDK
2.73's were Standard
3.08's were special option manual cars
3.27's were special option automatic cars

I would spin and count yours to find out what you have, or check to see if the tag is still on the pumpkin. Look close, it's bent around sometimes.

So from best (or worst depending on how you view it) case 3.08's to 3.55's could be worth it... All in how you view it. What is your driving conditions and your use of your car. City, highway, mix, more of one than the other. Do you care about gas mileage. What's in your car, stick or auto? Are you heavily modded, or just starting? What's your intentions: street or strip?

Answer all those questions and we can shoot you in a direction.

pretty much a weekend car i have a durango i cart the fam around in. the mustangs pretty much a project ive been workin on for a couple years now and just barely gettin it driveable. and its a modded car 5 speed and im not worried about gas milage. i guess what i really should do is buy like a 3.73 or a 4.10 and get it over with.
