AFTERMARKET BLOCK
Hey guy's what would you consider to be the best aftermarket block to build a 347 on a buget , I have seen some from DSS for about $950 - $1000 ready to go I beleve bored, notched . This is around what I will be spending at the local machine shop and waiting about 3-4 weeks to get it done. Now I'm not tring to break the bank just something solid and more reliable than the stock .I figure ether way I have to spend the cash might as well get something new/better ... THANKS PATRICK

An aftermarket block is going to run you close to $2000. I'd be willing to bet the block you are refering to from DSS is a glorified production block.

World Product, Dart $2000+ W/O machine work
Ford Racing $1700-1800 (Blocks alone) DSS runs great right up until they break if it is a stock block with a stroker kit thrown off in it. Money might not be able to buy happiness but it buys speed and quality. |

it all depends on how much hp you want to run...The Dss and Chp blocks are just new stock blocks basically...As stated above, the World Products Man o War block or the Dart iron eagle or iron eagle sportsman are what you are going to want to get if you are wanting to push a good amount of hp and not have to worry about the block breaking.
I would rather have too much block than riding the limits of a block any day.

So true Tony!!! Just think of the block as the foundation(cause it is). You wouldn't put $2,000,000 house on a popsicle stick foundation right? If your basically building a replacement stock motor then DSS is fine. Building a monster? Go with Dart or World!!!

Thanks for the help guy's, I guess I'm ether going to have to save up some more $$ or go a different way as to what I'm going to do with my motor. I would rather see my car sit than half-ass it and blow it up with a weak stock block .

honestly I was wanting around 450 , my biggest problem is that I did not do hardly any research on the 347 that I wanted to build . instead I went out and just bought the parts kb forged pistons ,forged i-beam rods and the crank ,thinking I could slap it together and have a 347 , the cost of the parts that I already have was not that bad but I can't see dropping around $1000 into a stock block that I was told that would not make it past 60k miles being I'm not easy on my car, I just need it last longer than 60k . this is what the guy at the speed shop that I deal with told me he might be wrong I don't now .My wife already has a problem with how much $$$ that i have put into the car. Now I know that no matter what I do it could blowup I just don't want to egg it on with something like that on my first build .Instead I was thinking about a nice 306 , b- cam , the gt -40 intake that I already have and some good flowing heads . Right now I really don't now what to do .
sorry for writing a book .

450hp. That DSS would be fine!!! Dont let the 347 scare you it will be just as reliable as a 306. The tech is up to par. All that oil burning and horror stories of the past are long been takin care of. Buy the DSS and a dozen roses for the wife and get back to sleeping in your bed. The couch is starting to fit your form to well and matresses are so much more comfy!

A stock block will hold 450 hp without a problem. Who said it wouldn't live past 60K miles? Kick him in the balls for talking so foolish.

Shoot... Darrell is right, You already own a block that will handle that powerlevel! I thought you had your heart set on a new block. Now you can save your grand buy the wife 2 dozen roses and spend the $960 bucks you have left on other go fast goodies with the wifes blessing!!!

darrell, just so i know is that hitting the stock block with some boost and nos, by no means will my car be a daily driver and for it to get 60k miles that will take years, my motor has life left in it, just needs to be torn down and cleaned up and new gaskets

I am not Darrell but I think I can answer this. The Block does not car how you make the power. It cares how fast you turn your crank. And it really cares if you run it LEAN under boost or if your timing is not set right with nitrous!!! Keep those in check and 500HP is no problem for a stock block.
