Hello & Good Buy?

sorry if this is in the wrong section

hi my names chris and im new here and to ford in general. i just sold my Chevelle Laguna Type S-3 and am looking to replace it with a 5.0 mustang. i stumbled upon an ad for one today with 140k miles for $2900:

pros: all the gaskets and things have been replaced, transmission is in good condition, its pretty much stock, in pretty good visual condition, basically everything besides the cons are good

now the cons: no fog lights (not a huge deal), the driver side door doesnt have a keyhole but is unlocked instead by remote, small tear in the headliner, passenger door doesnt open from outside due to a broken spring, and the engine is in great condition besides the fact that come cylinders are missing which, according to him, are most likely due to wires and spark plugs

the only thing im worried about is the engine missing. what do you guys think?

thanks in advance - chris

Dont buy it unless you can test drive it. It sounds like your just taking his word that the car runs good. People will tell you all sorts of lies just to unload their crap on to you. If he wants to make the sale he should be willing to put in new plug wiers, spark plugs ,cap and rotor. And prove that it runs as good as he was saying. 5.0 are all over the place you dont have to buy the first one you see. theres always going to be another one

oh yea sorry, its an '88 gt hatch with a manual transmission. everything is stock except for the door/remote thing and the alarm, the rims(which are now cobra rims), and the exhaust which was dumped because the tips kept scraping on the driveway

yea im definitely gonna test drive it and if theres a good possibility that i like it i'll take it to a shop with the guy and get it inspected.

Usually when you try and sell a car, and the engine is missing due to an extremely easy fix, the seller fixes it, and ups the asking price. To me that's a red flag.

Agree 100% ... If it were such an easy fix, why didn't he do it already. I would also ask why the gaskets are new.

don't get a vert... they are much more expensive to maintain or deal with honestly and more money to insure in most states over the hatch. Plus they have much more body flex issues and are heaviest of hatch or coupe models but if you like verts then check it out really good.

I wouldn't waste my time with the car your talking about because like mentioned above, if it was only the wires and cap/rotor needed then why not invest the money to get more moeny for the car? I mean you can get el cheapo plug wires from any parts start for like $25 and up and less for the cap/rotor so what gives? I wouldn't consister the car unless you got it to a mechanic of your choice and had him do a compression check on the motor while you waited.

good idea. i went and checked the car o everythut with a friend who knows a bit more about cars than i. the seller told me he replaced a gasket to solve a leak and while he had that done he said he replaced a whole bunch of the other gaskets just to prevent any other future issues. he got a brand new alternator and fuel pump. he hasnt changed anything else since he bought the car from the previous owner. the engine bay looks pretty untouched in terms of components besides the above named. the transmission and clutch seem really solid but the suspension will definitely need replacing since its the stock suspension. everything works fine and the body is in superb condition. when we test drove it i didnt notice much of a power loss or anything from the other 5.0s i test drove. would i be able to tell some cylinders are missing from just test driving it? also this may not matter and may not be true (although the seller and his wife agreed) when they were on the freeway he was in the mustang while she and his son followed in some suv. the seller ended up racing a z28 and winning.

also his 10-12 yr old son is nice and well behaved and his wife seems very genuine. noticing this just makes me a little more trusting
