My computer is being slow, so if this answer has already been posted, don't kill me. But that same thing happened to my truck in July 09. I ended up having a bearing race that melted and trashed my trans. Had to replace the trans, master & slave cylinder, and clutch.

My throwout bearing was bad and it sounded more like a whirring noise than metal-metal..

If it's just the throwout bearing...you'll still have to pull the trans and pull the throwout bearing off the input shaft. I've never replaced one on a ford, but on toyota's, they're a pita. If it's inside the trans, you may as well just take it to a shop to have it re-built or replaced. When you drive it, does it make noise in 1 or 2 specific gears, or in every gear?

Pull the trans off the bell housing and then you'll see the throwout bearing riding in the middle of the shift fork. Cake!

Sounds to me that it's just the throwout bearing. You'll still have to drop the transmission to replace it. It's on the input shaft of the trans and held in place by, I can't remember the name, but it looks like a fork. You have to remove that fork, pull the bearing off, replace the bearing, and line it back up with the fork again. Then secure the fork in place....re-install the trans and you should be good. If you know you can't do it at home, just take it to a shop and save yourself the headache. The cost will depend on the shops labor rate and the cost of the bearing.

If I'm wrong or left anything out, please, someone add to or correct me.

You can drive it all you want...until you end up on the side of the road. Eventually it will go out and leave you stuck wherever you are. Pull the tranny and replace it.

Is it possible the throw out bearing could just be bad and the clutch still be good?

Yes. The bearing is seperate from the clutch itself. But once the bearing goes bad...you'll be stuck.
