The Budget Build
Ok guys.. My 89 LX is getting a face lift over the next year. But I want some help. I picked up a complete long block super cheap this weekend. I'm going to put it on a stand and slowly build it...so i'm looking for some help deciding on a few items. Here are some key points..
I'm not building a track car... I'm building a street/daily driver that will occasionally see the strip. I'd like to do a slow budget build as I just found out the wife is pregnant and I don't need to be spending money like its going out of style. I'm thinking of leaving the bottom completely stock and going with H/C/I and possibly a 100-150 shot for the rare occasions she see's the strip. The gears were also ordered this weekend, stock gears are getting swapped for 4.10's. I've been told to stay away from alphabet cams, but I'm not sure which cam to go with. I want a cam that is going to help all over, but I want an aggressive idle. Looking for head, cam, intake suggestions and dyno numbers with different set ups. I'd like to be around the 350-400 rwhp range. i'm assuming on a stock block the 400 may be unachievable while still remain reliable. The block i picked up has 125k miles on it...anything that i need to look at or replace before building? One more semi off topic question... is anyone running royal purple in their stock 5mt's? If so what are you running? I've searched and have seen diff answers. I am in peoria, az.... If any local guys wanna give a hand when the build starts i'll be happy to supply the beer ![]() Current set up: BBK CAI BBK Shorties Bassani X-Pipe full exhaust-no cats flowmaster's with dumps MSD Ignition Electric Fan Hurst Short Throw ProComp tach (good for atleast 10 more hp) ![]() Thanks in advance for taking the time guys.

350-400whp isnt easy on a 302, easy for a 347 but to do it on a 302 youre gona have to spin the fn piss out of it. Id shoot for 300-315, much easier to obtain. Wish I knew you were looking I woulda sold you my shortblock for 100 bucks and brought it over, not like youre gona use the stock heads and cam anyways if you want more power. Anyways
tf 170s trickflow-r intake custom cam 4.10s lontubes/x/good chamberless mufflers prob easy 315whp and potential to break 11s

oh and just run 3 quarts of reg atf, my tranny feels great and 4th gear is basically missing a tooth

Honestly unsure of the miles, this stupid car had 3 motors in it before I bought it. Ran fine before I pulled it to drop in seans motor I bought, made 300/312 at he wheels so I would hope its in good shape
some guy said he wants it today but lives in prescott so I have little faith he will pull through

shortblock yeah, oil pump is new in it I just needed the oil pump/pickup/oil pan bolts. You can have the pan too if you want even though you dont need it and it has a dent in the bottom lool. If this guy doesnt buy it today its yours

on a different note... for anyone thats good with trans, when going into 2nd at a low speed (ie turning onto a street) unless i keep my hand on the stick it will try to pop out... would this be a synchro issue? i've always ran royal purple in my other cars and had excellent luck with it. I would gladly pay someone to come over and just go thru the car... i need someone with an eye and an ear for fox's that will help go thru the car with me.

mine did the same shit, sean reshimmed my input shaft and it quit doing it. All he had to do to do it is pull the bearing retainer, if you pull your tranny should ask him to do it, shouldnt cost much
